I just ordered a .22-250 target weight barrel for my Blaser R93. I plan to use it for hunting varmints. Some small, distant, and in failing light (stretching post dusk and pre-dawn as far as possible). I plan to stick to illuminated reticle scopes only for all applications in the future.

Swarovski seems to have the best reputation for customer service among the premium European scopes and I like the 6 to 1 magnification capability of the Z6i. I want at least 4-1/2x or lower on the low side with the most field of view I can get. I want at least 16x on the high side. At my age, I probably no longer have a 7mm exit pupil, so in addition to a big objective I also need the best lense and coating technology for low light. I would really like BDC capability like the Swarovski Ballistic Turret – which is only available on a few models so far.

The Z6i 3-18x50 meets my magnification wants but at 15x only has a 3.3mm exit pupil.

The Z6i 2.5-15x56 isn’t quite 16x on top but gives a slightly better 3.7mm exit pupil at 15x.

Both are available with the Ballistic Turret.

Any opinions on which is the best trade off as a varmint scope? Any idea how much better these would be in low light than the Z6i 2.5-15x44? Any better choices from Zeiss, S&B, etc?

I would go with the 3-18 Swarovski scopes pick up tons of light no matter what and in my opinion to be shooting prarie dogs and such at long distances I would rather have the 18x than an extra 6mm of glass.

Either is going to work fine.

I would probably disagree with Chris and say that if low light is of primary concern, 56mm objective has merit.  15x is plenty of magnification for most things.

That having been said, there is little practical difference between the two no matter how you slice it.

If you can live with 4x zoom, Hensoldt 4-16x56 is also worth looking at.  As far as low light performance goes, Zeiss glass agrees with my eyes a little better than Swaro does, but that is a personal choice.  It is also more money:

I do more reading then posting. I love my ruger 22-250. I have a Zeiss 6-20X50 conquest and it is a go to combo. That being said I just ordered a Trijicon tr23 5-20X50 and am really looking forward to getting it. The guys at SWFA are the best to deal with. This scope is new to the market. No other scope made has the optical system like Trijicon. People I have talked to that have used them love them. If you have not considered the TR23 line take a look. bshooter..

After receiving  my Trijicon TR232 I will say it is a very worthy piece of glass.Big Grin. This scope would work very well with any 22-250. bshooter..

I have had the TR232 since Tuesday 8-17. Checking the scope at dusk along side a NF and a Zeiss Conquest, the scopes are pretty equal. I can only see about 300 yds in my neighborhood. All three of these scopes have very clean glass. All three have a very good warranty. Both NF and Conquest have more reticle choices. I chose the Trijicon TR232 for Deer hunting in low light conditions. Your shooting eye is drawn to the center of the radical as soon as you look through the scope. I really like all three scopes. The Trijicon TR232 dose everything the manufacture says with a smileWink. Trijicon makes scopes other manufactures should take a good look at. I hope my opinion will help you. bshooter..
