After re-reading Ch. 17 of Applied Ballistics, I got curious enough to re-evaluate my bullet choices for my .308 loads, especially now that I have a rifle with an 11.25 twist. Basically, if you look at the ratio between the SD (sectional density) and the G7 BC, you get the form factor. A G7 BC higher than the SD will yield a lower form factor number - effectively more bullet performance for the weight. What I was interested in was finding a bullet that would - for the same or a little more weight exceed the performance of the 165 gr. Accubond.

What I found was that I would still need to move up in bullet weight to see any significant difference and even then there would be some trade-offs. The main advantage to a heavier bullet would be increased terminal impact. There is a minimal gain in wind performance and a minor loss in drop. For my uses, I didn't see an advantage to switching at this point. I still have yet to really develop a load specific to this rifle to see if the Accubonds will be .5 MOA or less, so that may trigger testing other bullets like the Berger 175s and 185s.

However, what I know about the Accubond is that I don't need significant terminal performance beyond what it provides. I have had great results with it so far and have self-imposed limits on how far out I will shoot on each species I hunt - elk, deer, and antelope. A 3" wind difference @ 400 yards in a 20 mph 3:00 wind isn't enough to change in exchange for more recoil. Other considerations are that I already have one rifle where the Accubond is part of a great load and I can just keep buying large quantities from the same lot. There are advantages to standardization.
Reaction time is a factor...
