Im in the process of getting a .223 savage 12flv. black synthetic stock, bull barrel, etc. something in the 4-20 or 6.5-24 or something of the sort. i would like a 40 or 50mm objective. what kind of options do i have for a descent scope under or around 300$? i want something that will keep zero and with target turrets or one i can put target turrets.

Slick,
It might be more mag then you want, but I recently picked up the Mueller 8-32x44 and am extremely happy with it. Nicely built, 30 mm tube, optics to me are just as clear as my Elite 4200, noticeably brighter then Buckmaster I have. Clicks are precise and audible.
One thing I can not verify is longevity though, only had it a week and one firing session.

If you can afford $350.00 you might consider looking at a Weaver Classic V24 6-24x42 I have one with a dedicated 55 grain .223 recticle but it can be gotten with several other types also. It is a high quality scope that is crisp and clear at all magnifications and Weaver has been making high quality scopes for many years and are well worth the cost.

The Sightron 6.5-20X42 is a great scope. With the pricing, they are hands down the best value out there. -Al

In a variable the weaver would be my pick in that price range or if you could live with a fixed power the Super Sniper `16x42 or 20x42 would be reliable with good target knobs.

Or, if you drop down in power on the top end to 12X - 16X or so, the same $ can get you a bit better scope. I shoot prairie rats a couple times every year, and I've found that during most of the day, I dial down to 12X - 14X. The heat mirage during most of the day becomes the limiting factor in seeing such small critters through your scope at super long range, so I might as well have the increased FOV to make it easier to spot bullet impact through the scope and get on another pd after a shot. Truthfully, my scope power stays at 12X - 14X most of the time. I like having more power available for early morning shooting and for target shooting, but if I had to sacrifice some scope spec to stay within a budget, super high magnification would be the first thing to go.

+1 on what he said. I have 2 20X scopes and one is the Zeiss conquest. Neither of them give the preformance expected. I would drop back to 14-16 power any day. The added power mostly only magnifies the limitations of the scope. It is easer for my older eyes to pick out long range PDs with the 4.5-14 Conquest than the 6.5-20 Conquest. It may help with younger eyes than mine.
