Hi,

I know nothing about scopes so  I'm  here to ask for your help.

I'm buying a Sendero 300 Ultramag and want to start shooting targets at 1000 yards.  My experience with this type of shooting is zero.  For years I've enjoyed hand guns and reloading.

My interest is now shifting.  I'd like to spend no less than 1K and no more than 2K on the scope.  If I buy, I only want to buy once.

I live in the high desert and the scope should be handle the heat.  I know at a certain point the heat will generate the mirage effect.  This long range shooting will be a slow  learning process, matching shooting ability with reloading....... and that's the fun/challenge.

All comments are welcome

Thanks
Chuck

It is good that you are willing to devote enough funds to get a very good scope.  I suggest you take a look at the Optics for Sale thread, there is a very nice Swarovski that I don't think has sold yet, and a Kahles that would suit your purposes very well.  Look at the SWFA riflescopes section and get a feel for the various scopes' capabilities and look at the samplelist for some really good deals.  You might find one at a very good price.  My suggestions are IOR, Super Sniper, Swarovski, and Zeiss.  Zeiss/Hensoldt would be a suggestion, but they are all above your price range.  On the samplelist, you can find some excellent Swarovskis at significant reductions in price.  I try to use the samplelist whenever possible.  Many of the scopes there are demo models, some were used only for advertising pictures, some are actually used/refurbished.  I've had great success with the samplelist.  And BTW, there is also a Premier Heritage 3-15 on the samplelist for only 100.00 more than your stated upper limit.  I would go the extra hundred...
You have a lot of challenges ahead, but it should be fun.  Quality tools and workmanship will ensure it is not a bad experience...

I agree 100% with Kickboxer and would only add these few things. Don't be in any real hurry to buy your scope, even if it means missing a deal at the moment. You should really do as much reading on long range scopes as you can stand. And certainly you want to get the most for your money high or low so ask questions. As KB mentioned there are scopes to focus on more than others. Capping your budget at 2K still allows you to buy into really good quality. And the Sample List is likely where you will find unbeatable deals. The Zeiss Diaviry (spelling is off) will probably provide the best glass of all mentioned except Smit & Bender which starts well above your max. the tricky thing about the Diaviry is getting target turrets or atleast getting them will add significant cost. IOR is a excellant choice for solid construction and target turrets and the glass is a close second to Zeiss.
Super Sniper I do not have any experience with, but if KB recommends it thats good enough for me. Swarovski is also a very good, solid, well established scope with a good selection of rectiles and turrets and offers glass that some say equals Ziess. One other scope you should consider is the SN-3 from US Optics. These scopes are hammer solid with glass that in my experience is equal to Zeiss and you can have it built to your needs with turrets, rectiles and many extras that in some cases are part of the package. They do start in the max end of your budget, but if youi don't get too extravigant you can keep the cost down especially if you qualify for military discount. They appreciate those of us who served and they show it. You have alot of research ahead of you but, you will probably enjoy it as much as I have. You have found the treasue trove of knowledge here for scopes and long distance shooting. And you will be pleased to find that you can get the most basic to the most cutting edge info without being insulted or disrespected. Ofcourse once you've been here awhile and the new is gone you'll be fair game as many of us have come to enjoy. One tid-bit of advice, when talkin about distance shooting call it just that. There are a few who get ruffled (mostly newbies) when useing the term "sniper" too freely. Snipers are the elite and as much as I/we want to aquire "Sniper skills" only they have done the training and earned the title. I am glad you found these guys to help you be successful in your ambitions. Your questions and time here will help many others learn with you priceless info and respect for a worthy endevor.

Welcome to the OT.

P.S.  Remember READ, ask questions, READ, ask questions, then start to narrow your scope choices. Try not to act/buy to soon. Your on your way to some serious fun.

Gentlemen,

Thanks for your response.  I have quickly learned how much I do not know know about scopes. With this mind, I'm finding out an hour or two every evening researching all aspects of scopes is increasing my knowledge base; however, I have to admit my knowledge base is TINY, but it is growing.  The more I find out the more I realize what I don't know (if the makes sense).  I'm going to continue down this path until I feel fairly comfortable that the scope I select has the correct application for accurate long shots at  paper.
I may have to increase the top end of my spending window a tad bit if the information I'm gathering leads me to that price range.

Thanks for your comments they are very helpful

Regards
Chuck

While researching scopes I found out how many excellent scopes are not produced in the USA. I've decided that there are two scopes that I will not buy.  It sure isn't because they are not excellent scopes; however, they are not made in the USA.  I looked at schmidt and bender and Swarovski and I like them both and the quality of their product.   Times are hard enough for most working Americans and I just feel spending the money here is better.  So, I'm narrowed down too US Optics and Nightforce.  I've already talked to US Optics and plan to schedule an appointment and look at their facility.  That will happen is a few weeks.  Until then I will continue to research

I talked to Nightforce today and learned they are  adding a finer level of adjustment for the MOA on thier scopes. We talked about a 8-32x56NXS.  During the conversation I learned Nightforce will be having 0.125 (1/8th) incremental adjustment for their windage and elevation.  Currently, the best they offer is 0.25. This  will be available in May (2010).  This scope offers 65moa elev., 45moa wind with a 20 MOA rail for mounting.

On 05 Mar 2010 I'll be meeting the US Optics representative at their facility, touring their facility and addressing different configurations for their product.  I'm looking at a SN-3 3.8-22X.  They are expensive,  starting price @ $2300.00.  By the end of the meeting I'll have a good idea of the cost for what I"m looking for.

All comments welcome.

Thats cool they will let you tour the facility, maybe you will be able to design the optic you want and order it straight through them.  Try to get some pictures if they will let you.

On 05 March I visited US Optics located in Brea, Ca.  The facility is located in an industrial complex about 8 minutes off of the 57 freeway.  Very nice area and it's in  a rather new industrial complex.  Entry is obtain via the south side, toward the rear of the building.  Once you open the door your immediately in the lobby/sales area  and it's loaded with scopes, mounts and rings, all of which are in glass display cases.  Just to the south of the lobby is their CNC machine shop. The shipping area is adjacent to the machine shop. There are racks, coated in plastic/rubber  where the scopes are  carefully placed with Customer order forms waiting to be shipped.   To the west of the shops is an assembly area and clean room.  Overall all, a nicely organized small business with a knowledgeable staff.  I did not tour  those (clean room etc.) areas due to the possibility of introducing FOD but I did entry the machine shop area.

I met Jeff and we spent the next 90 minutes talking scopes.  Thanks to the folks on this forum, I've done an immense amount of research and actually sounded like I knew what I was talking about.

I  looked at the SN-3. 3.8-22x with ERGO turret, 58mm objective, parallax control ERGO, 35mm tube, Low Profile Rapid Focus eyepiece, MDMOA reticle, with the EREK 1/4 MOA, elevation US # 40 Style MOA 1/4,  the 11 Position Rheostat (Red) for a Remingtion 700 Long action with 35 mm P6M3500-XL mounts/rings. Also I looked at the 58 mm T-PAL 2" sunshade, the honeycomb Anti-Reflective Device (ARD) and the U.S.O flip-up covers. Since I reside in the high desert and it's so very bright during the day, I considered purchasing the ARD, sunshade etc.

Jeff provided a hands on sample of the above scope and I was able to check the clarity of the lens, zoom the scope for distance and observe the close up field of view. Ajusted the parallax and basically conducted a systems check out  (SCO).  If was very bright day on Friday and the illuminated reticle  had fantastic contrast even though is was as bright as it was.  Overall,  I was very pleased the the scope.  I was lucky enough to recently  handle a  Nightforce 8-32x56NXS and a Swarovski scope.  Having something to compare the USO too, made the experience of visiting their facility worth the effort of driving a long distance.

That's All Folk's

Each night since I've joined Opticstalk, I've spent several hours  researching scopes.  I visited the USO production facility and  have compared (hands on)  Ziess, Swarovsk, NightForce and Leupold scopes.  I ended up with 8-32x56 NXS NightForce scope.  This week I get to mount the scope and finally I can start shoot every other night after work.  I'm expecting to learn an bunch more about scopes and then the art of paper punching.

Everyone thanks for all your comments, I really appreciated it.

Thats great to hear. What would you say was some of the deciding factors in your choice? I will probably be buying another scope this fall and what you saw in your comparasions would be really appreciated. One thing I want in this next scope is side focus in a 30 or 35mm tube. Did you see this option in the scopes you compared?
Look forward to seeing your range report. Ain't scope and gun research cool!
