I need two scopes for two rifles
1) I am putting together a .308 bolt gun that I plan to use a SS 3-9x or maybe a 10x fixed....
I plan to shoot it from 0 to as far as my skills can take me, probably 800yards (I know the bullet is going to move a ways at that distance).
I like the idea of the variable and the FFP of the 3-9 but buying the 10x lends more money for ammo.

2) For kicks I would like to take my FAL and scope it and use it for 0-500yards plinking
I am considering either the 3-9x / 6x / or 10x SS again the 3-9 has the variability, looking through a cheapy scope at 6x its almost like there is no magnification though the field of view is a bit bigger than at 10x and for a non-tackdriving rifle most seem to recommend a fixed 4x or 6x, the 10x through the same cheap scope makes the magnification "noticeable"

Being un-able to shoot each of the SS scopes I could really use the help from those of you who have.
I appreciate the help.

I have had the standard 10x w/ side focus and now a 3-9.  I borrowed another members on here 3-9 while i had my 10x to compare and at 100yds the better quality of the glass of the variable shined over the standard 10x.  I was able to make out more detail with the 9x on the variable than the 10x on the fixed. This is not saying the 10x is a slouch it is a great scope, but they use different glass.  The 3-9 and the 10xHD are more along the same lines.
For me it would be a 3-9 on the 308 and a 6x on the FAL.
