Was looking for information and hopefully some first hand information on the .17 HM2

I'm looking at this rifle.

I have found a dependable supply of ammo and kind of like having odd ball gear, so it's right up my alley.

Anyone else have one? shot one?

If God didn't want me to play with it, he'd of made my arms shorter.

I have a .17 HM2 in the now-discontinued Remington 504.  I love it!  I'm sure the reason the cartridge isn't more popular is because of the huge success of the more powerful .17 HMR.  Still, the .17 HM2 is a fantastic small game round, and in my opinion, I think it has even greater accuracy potential than .17 HMR under 100 yds, and that's saying something!  After a bedding job to correct for some issues I had with my rifle out of the box, mine shoots spectacularly well.

The only issue I've had with it is finding a reliable supply of ammo.  About 2 years ago, I could get ammo everywhere.  Now, I can only find it on occasion.

I've only shot a friends .17 HM2, but would concur with Mr. Dude that it was wicked accurate!
Might have been the most accurate rifle I've ever fired.

Thanks Guys.

Ted   I have bought a ton of ammo from the guys I linked to. We Texans have to pay sales tax, but I've never had any issues getting what I order from them.

Looks like I may have to head to Bass Pro tomorrow and see if they have one in stock. If not I'll order from Bud's online.

Again, appreciate the input fellas.

I would call first.  My local Bass Pro quit carrying both the ammo and rifles for it.

I've bought pistol ammo from Ammo To Go before and was satisfied with the experience.  If my local supply dries up, I certainly wouldn't have any reservations buying from them.

I have had no luck at all getting anything but a busy signal when I call Bass Pro, but it won't be a total waste of a trip if they don't have it. "TGI Fridays is right around there" Super

I've been riding the fence on buying one of these as well but if I find a nice 504 I won't make the mistake of passing it up again.

I'm a huge fan of the hm2 round also. I have 3 guns chamberd in this round - 504, Marlin 917 and a 10/22 that I converted with Volquartsen parts. I use this round for squirrels mostly, but I just love it either way. The Marlin has never been fired and the 10/17 sees the most use, but that 504 sure is sweet. The only thing I can think to comment on is the stench that Eley and Remington. 17 hm2 put out when fired. CCI and Hornady have a normal smell. It's certainly not a deal breaker; just thought I'd mention it.

Bought the Savage Mark II with accutrigger. Mounted the 6-24 crossfire on it and a bipod. It's going to be a range only gun and should be just the thing for getting my daughters into bench shooting. My youngest has trouble with the dimensions of the Marlin .22 mag I used to teach my oldest with so the shorter Savage seems to be just the ticket there.

Ti  appreciate the heads up on the smelly rounds. I have 4 types of ammo for the rifle and will post some range pics and results when the skeeters die off enough to go play with it.

As time and money for hunting trips has gotten leaner it looks like if I'm going to shoot, it's going to be off the bench for a while. Sad

Sweet! Looking forward to the pics and results.
