Gentlemen. Id like to hear your comments on the question - if you use fixed power scope for both target practice and hunting? Why or why not you do so? Also be interested to hear what kind of scopes recticles you use.
Bring it on gentlemen.....

I think a fixed 4x or 6x scope is very acceptable for both chores.

This year I learned that 4x is all one needs for a lot of situations (target and hunting).

I used to use fixed when I had good vision, but now at 63 I need long variables. How I long for the days when all I ever used was iron sights!Of all the rets. that I use ,my favorite is the Swaro Z5 BDX.It is both a BDC & a sort of mil dot in between the hash marks & on the sides.Very Cool!

3-10 for hunting
8-25 for target.
I think that with todays decent quality and pricing of variables it is a waste of money to buy a fixed.

Wouter, there are more than a few of us SS10x HD owners that might disagree with your statement about a waste of money on a fixed power.Fixed scopes will always have there place in the world, weather it be hunting or bench rest or plain old plinkling!
Just my .02cents!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My S.S. 10x42 is my scope for everything. Just have not got a chance to use for big game yet. I am considering the 3-9, but I am really holding out for a mid-power variable from S.S. or maybe the Vortex PST line if they get the bugs worked out.

Apolgies maybe I came on a bit strong.
The point I was trying to make is that variables give little up in image quality nowadays.
So for a bit of extra $$$ you can get more use if you are going to engage targets from 30 yds out to whatever. If you only engage targets at one distance then yes you do not need a variable, I concede.

No apologies neccessary, you always add very positive suggestions. This is a great site & I'm learning every day thanks to guys like you.Opions are like A holes,we all have one, some stink & some are great, take what you want.
I do understand your point of view as my favorite scope is my Swaro Z5 3.5-18 BRX.

I am going toward fixed power. I used to think I need a 4-12x50 then I downsized to a 3-10x50 and one 3-9 and next year I will used mostly fixed power. I very rarely dial up or down my scopes anyway. I usually keep them at 5x all the time.

the only thing more depressing than having only one scope, would be having only 1 shotgun
