I have lots of questions. not exactlly a newbie but have been away from shooting for a bit more than a decade. No - not prison. Kids. there was a show on TV and the host mentioned that he uses camera filters on his scopes. Great idea that never occured to me before. First barrier to trying this is that I dont know which scopes are threaded and of those which are using a the right threads and diameters to be compatible with camera filters. I have never seen specifications for this for any scope so I dont know if some companies use proprietary or non standard threading or have theirs set threads set so deep that you cant use a filter.
To try to put this into practice I need a scope for my new 204 ruger rifle. I like variables scopes (maybe 6-18) but I also like my SS 10x42 so maybe I will try the 16x42 version if it is threaded. I am working with a real budget, dont have 2K to spend (cant raid the college fund). . I need suggestions up to $500. but prefer under 300 (cost of a SS) unless something great is just a bit more. Also - which filters are people finding most useful or maybe I should ask which filters seem to work best in the West prarie dog hunting (tans, desert) which work in PA (very green). I know you guys sell them all and you really cant talk down about any of the products. I cant expect a $200 scope to be as good as a $800 scope - or can i? Which scopes deliver way above their price? I talked to one guy (avid airgun guy shooting a $1800 daystate air gun) and his opinion was his $400 hawke sidewinder was as good as any $800 leupold. it sounds too good to be true. have competitive products gotten this much better in the last decade? |

Don't know about others but Leupold does offer threaded filters for their scopes.
Your friend is partially right. Hawke SW Tactical glass is VERY decent for the money. Hawke's customer service is on par with Leupold. Here is mine with a digital woodlands camo job and it is also sits on a high power airgun
.204 doesn't need a super tough glass. Hawke SW Tactical 6.5-20x42 will do anything you want.

why do you want a filter? do you have that much time to look at the picture? but to answer your question, Leupold makes a group of filters , I use a set of 44 and 50 mm for my leos, and the 50's will also match the thread pitch on my NF 50 sunshades, not the objective (strange I know). The yellow filters work especially well on over cast days, and in snow to inhance the target contrast that mushes out at the side lines. The bluish filter (a uv filter) is great for desert praries dogs in the heat of the summer to cut mirages and "cool" the sight picture. The lighter orange and yellow work well in the early hours of big game hunting and on rock chucks to contrast their darker coat with the reds and yellows of backround colors. They can be used in combination or stacked but of course the total amt. of light is reduced. If you want to try camera filters and experiment with thread pitch good luck.

TRY THIS OUT... I have suggested this to many (as I was told to wear them at one point)...They come with interchangeable lenses...
You will get 4 different colored lenses...
They are on sale so get them while you can I can tell you they are worth every penny...
You will wear them everywhere after you see what they do to colors / shading and your overall vision on any day...
Campmor doesn't know squat about them and they do not list the other lenses that come along with them... They are a buyout company as these models are last years maybe two years old.
I can tell you this you get 4 total lenses, 1 clear, 1 yellow, 1 amber, 1 rose/ruby... They are well built and will last...
I blindly bought 10 pairs of these (for friends & family) and of the Polar Max (which is about the same) and they all had 4 sets of lenses per pair.
for the $60 it is a great investment... Edited by 338LAPUASLAP - September/19/2010 at 18:51 |
