I only have $100 for the budget so please no recommendations on "just buy a $400 scope".  Yes I know how much better they are.  i really wanted a closeout price viper, but all the reticles available do nothing for me, i wanted a wide duplex or mildot.  I'm looking for an AR15 toprail mount riflescope. After days of searching and reading on the forums I've narrowed to these two.  My wants are pretty simple (yet very difficult): A great high variable power (x-20x50mm) scope for $100.

Main contenders: Excellent

Vortex Crossfire 6-24x50 AO (sold here on SWFA, $99.99, Orig $199.99)
Simmons Whitetail Classic 6.5-20x50mm AO (Midwayusa, $99.99 Orig $249.99)

I was mainly wondering if anyone here has direct experience with either, I really would be the ginuea pig here and buy both to compare, but cash is strapped for now.  For only $100 both these scopes seem to be of very high value right now, competitive with the $250 price range.  I think so far I am leaning towards the Vortex, but wanted to hear opinions first!

also have a side question regarding mounting rings, my top receiver is picatinny, but 90% of the stuff i find are weaver mounts.. I know the weaver isn't the exact same size but it does "fit".  I was looking for picatinny-specific 1'' rings (Will these scopes require High or X-High?) around $30 or less.  The Millett and Vortex sold here looked nice but were of course weaver.  Thanks in advance!

How is movement on the SSALT since I would be using the rubber reducers inside the rings? Seems like the scope could possibly move around back and forth or not be as tight as the correct 1'' size

They ain't rubber.  I dont' have mine in hand yet but if they are the same as the gen I models its an aluminum insert and i had no shifting when using the SWFA rings and inserts on a 300 win mag for over 300 shots.

I have been using the Vortex for two years on a rimfire and a centerfire with good results.

has anyone directly compared the SSALT to the Burris PEPR?  (typing this I just realized, salt and pepper...how ironic)
