Thanks for the invite today:) I had fun shooting, we need to go again. We will need to find a place in there that can get us to 1000yds or more:)

600 yard cold bore, cold shooter. We could have shot further, but we were having so much fun we forgot to.

Nice! I hope to shoot like that when I grow up!!
Now you have me perplexed!! I had determined that my next build was to be a 270wsm. I do like the 300wsm but have always liked 270 more. BUT!!! for 1000yd+ the 300wsm makes an overwhelming case. I had in mind that I'd load 140's for the 270wsm which have proven very good for distance. If I built a 300wsm I'd planned to load 168's. I wouldn't care to go heavier unless it just wouldn't perform with the 168's. Alot of you guys laff a recoil, unfortunatly my punished ole frame don't like it so much anymore. I have carried my 300wm Sendro all this yr and its recoil is really not worthy of mention. But any more than it gives would discourage my useing it. So it comes down to ballistics and bullet options. Clearly the 300 offers more options. But the fact is I will only load what the rifle likes best. So, the next consideration is you guy's personal experience. Now the 270 haters try to control yourselves!! Its a proven contender............. I guess I'm looking some gentle simple wisdom to help me see the obvious knowing that I am somewhat biased toward the 270.

Again impressive shooting!!

Sgt D if you are thinking WSM, I would suggest the 7mm! 162gr AMAX's or 175gr SMK's at 2950-3000fps are serious performers! If I wasn't just dead set on a non-magnum for my next build, it would be the way I would go.

Please elaborate?? I really don't like 7mm but since I'm asking for experience and determined to be teachable I sincerely want to know your experience and thoughts. I'll have to buy loading dies for what ever I build so the doors are open. My build plateform is a Winchester 70 7mm. I'll be fitting a stock to the build and it will probably be just under a varmint style contour. I'm not building anymore heavy rifles (for myself).

The 7wsm is a very popular long range cartridge for good reason.   Heavy 7mm bullets have great BCs and the WSM gets better velocities than the Rem Mag. I like that cartridge also.

When you say heavy, whats heavy?? I won't be loading anything 200+. The thoughts of 180's make my neck spasam! Crutch

Edited to say a 180gr 30-06 round is the cause of a distinct facial feature between my eyes experienced many yrs ago. If that scope had had a logo on the rim I'b be branded "Weaver".

Ditto what Bitterroot said! A 162gr AMAX has B.C. pretty much the same as the 208gr 30 cal bullet. And the difference in muzzle velocity starting them from the same case is huge! Especially since you are starting your build from a long action anyway. You can leave them bullets long, saving more room for powder!

Do you have a 7mmwsm? How does the recoil compare to a 300wsm? I'll probably have to build a break for it anyway but they seem so close in so many ways I'm looking a decided justifier. The 162 and 175gr sound like good options. I know I can look at ballistics charts but I want hands on advice.

No I don't have one. When I bought this rifle, I chose the 300. Since then I have found out how much more efficient 7mm bullets are. Take my new 7-08, with a 162gr bullet started at 2750(hoping), compared to my 178gr started at 3050. At 1000 yards the 7mm has about the same drop, .3 mils less wind... Even with a 300 FPS slower start.

Sgt D, I came across this rifle recoil table awhile back. Hope you find it useful.

I GOOD break will make the rifle managable for you Sgt D.  I shot my 300WSM without the break once, won't do that againCrutch
