I recently purchased my first scope from SWFA, a Leupold Mark AR 6-18 x 40.

http://swfa.com/Leupold-6-18x40-Mark-AR-Riflescope-Package-Deal-P44577.aspx

It is mounted on a 24" bull barrel AR upper, so it will be used mostly for controlled, stationary target shooting (no run-and-gun or hunting).

I'm interested in purchasing something to protect the scope, at a minimum some type of 'lens caps'.  Since it's my first scope, I don't know what type of covers I need or want.

Would you recommend "flip ups", or a simple set of removable lens covers, or perhaps something like the Leupold neoprene full-scope cover?

Open to suggestions, thanks!

I like the butler creek flip ups for use in the field but if you are storing the rifle in a safe with other guns the leupold neoprene cover is awesome because it keeps them from getting scratched up.

I have both the butler creek flip ups, and a scopecoat - http://www.scopecoat.com/
If you are taking the gun to the range in it's case, and only taking it out there and shooting it, I would think the scopecoat would be enough.

The butler creek caps are nice out in the field, where they can stay closed until they need to be opened.  They also stay on the gun when in use, you just flip them open.  The scopecoat requires you to take it off, and put it in your pocket or leave it in your vehicle, gun case, etc.

If you want to go overboard, get butler creek caps put on, then measure the overall length and diameter of each end and order a scopecoat to go over top.  Overkill, but it would work.

I had the scopecoat first, then decided to go the butler creek route instead.

Thanks for the input.

I guess the flip ups are the most versatile, since I can close them when I'm not shooting to keep the dust out.  When the gun isn't in use, it will be in a soft case, so I don't know if the full scope cover is necessary.

For the flip ups, so I need to get a specific model / size, or is it pretty obvious which type I need to buy?

Call or e-mail SWFA and inquire which caps you'll need for the scope you bought.  They should be able to tell you which ones you need.
