Greetings all.

I have a some questions about the Weaver Classic V series of rifle scopes.
1.) I would like to get general observations from owners (past and present) about the common concerns of scopes - durability, repeatability, optical clarity, etc.
2.) Comparisons of the Classic V versus the SWFA Super Sniper from current and/or past owners of both.

Ultimately, I plan on getting a SWFA Super Sniper fixed power scope. But, since I don't know exactly which power I want, I thought I would try the Classic V in 4-16 to get an idea on the magnification for my needs. I see the Classic V as having enough similarities to the Super Sniper to give me a good gauge on which SWFA product I should eventually get.

In case anyone needs to know:

.308 Savage Model 10 FCP-K
160 - 180 Scenars/Sierra SMK
Max range of 600 yards.
Max magnification of 16x.
Target and hunting.

Although it would be useful to get recommendations on which to get, I think that it would be educational to solve this for myself. I also put a limit on the magnification for personal reasons.

So, I would like to thank all of you in advance for any ideas and opinions given here. If I missed any details, just let me know.

I've been happy with the Weavers I've owned, some old, some new. Mine have been on rimfire rifles and nowhere near 16x on the top end so I can't help much there.

I would be a little concerned about 16x with a 42mm objective as exit pupil suffers a bit on the high end. This of course may not be an issue if you usually long range shoot on sunny days. I personally can't hold a rifle still enough in a stand or against a tree etc. to use any more than 10x on the top end hunting.

What you're looking to do sounds pretty reasonable to me actually. "I have a smith and wesson I-Bolt .30-06 topped with a Falcon Menace 4-14 x 44 and do much the same thing"

Personal observations. As noted above, the high end for hunting really doesn't suit my style of hunting. I stalk a lot and the gun with scope make for a fairly heavy rig to hump all day. The Falcon only has a 5 year warranty as opposed to some of the other scopes it is in a price bracket with. "put $80 a year in the piggy bank and then if it fails you can buy a new one" My thinking, the Weaver has a better warranty.

Neilbilly,
 Thank you for your input
I share your concern about the 16x magnification. I considered a 50mm objective to to increase the exit pupil, but I prefer the lower scope to bore centers. I tend to favor a fixed power scope, so I am constantly drawn to the SS when doing any 'research'. Those models have 42 mm objectives which suites me fine. I either adapt to the ~2.6mm exit pupil at 16x or, as I mentioned in my initial post, I use the Weaver as a gauge to help determine which fixed magnification I am most comfortable with.
The more I dwell on this and read all the wonderful information here, the more I expect that I will ultimately end up with 3 of the SS scopes. One each at 6x, 10x, and 16x. But, that will take time and running the experiment with the Weaver will help me determine what order to to acquire them in. Not to mention, I will end up with what I hope to be a decent variable if the need ever arises.
I use a picatinny Mil-Std-1913 rail that has proven to have acceptable repeatability. This will allow me to swap out scopes before the trip to the range or the hunt begins.

Almost forgot.

Welcome

I can see myself getting a few of the SS scopes at some point. Up until recently I hunted more than bench shot. Free time and extra money have shrank as the kids got older. I've yet to hear of anyone that bought a SS hating it. "except for one guy who recently had a hissy fit over a speck in the tube that SWFA wasn't magically able to fix over the phone and an even bigger hissy fit because Dallas froze over and delayed him getting a replacement as fast as he wanted"

I think you've got a good plan in place, and look forward to your observations.

Neilbilly,
Thank you for the welcome, it is a pleaser to be here. I wish I would have joined sooner.
If you looked closely, you would notice that there is a common theme to the scopes I mentioned. Budget. I have a young family now and darn it if my little rugrats aren't expensive! I understand what you mean when you said "free time and extra money have shrank".
I will make certain to post my findings for anyone that may be interested in the saga of my 'practical' scope selection.

Shoot safe,
