would a person be better off sending their firearm back to the factory for repair or is it a better idea to keep it local?
what kind of turn around time dose smith&wesson have on revolver repairs?

Always send it back to the manufacturer when possible.
A company like S&W has free shipping both ways and a lifetime warranty. Why pay to have a local gunsmith fix it at a cost to you, when the manufacturer will do it for free? I have used S&W repair twice, and the firearm was returned to my door in less than 2 weeks each time.
