I was laying on the couch last night looking at my ruger 10/22. A question popped in my head. Is there a base on the market for it that would allow you to still use ironsights? This is my thought. It would be very good idea to have a 10/22 with a scope with quality repeatable qd rings. Then you can shoot it with the scope, dettach the scope and use factory iron sights.

Normally this is not recommended. best ideal is to get you a decent 22 with irons and keep your 10/22 scoped. |

Yes, they are called see thru rings and they work very, very, very well since no to low recoil, Leupold and Millet make them as well as (dare I mention) weaver... I despise the old weaver bases while I know some swear by them, I once had a close friend say "look you can bend them into place"...
I will post some pics... FIRST LEUPOLD NOW MILLET Edited by 338LAPUASLAP - May/02/2011 at 18:28 |

I do not know why this is so, I would suggest doing both is the way to go. The Irons will be unaffected by the scope and the scope unaffected by the Irons, I have used the 10/22 with sights and a scope since I was 12 or 13 I was glad to get back and start plinking with it again It is some of the funnest shooting in the world, string and soup can or string and pop can with a clear backstop of course and nothing around because of the ricochet. I have even beeded with a powerful magnet a 10/22 .920 smooth barrel to just plink without rears for a reference. Talk about a challenge and good practice for shot gunning. While it sounds crazy and inaccurate you get the hang of it quite quickly... Again I would see absolutely nothing wrong for using the see-thru rings, they are not as flimsy as they look they are actually quite resilient and beefy in their own little way. I would suggest a scope with a decent amount of elevation. |

Kind of a catch .22 "pun intended"
To get really good cheek weld with your scope you want the scope as low as you can get away with. Mounting the scope high and getting an optic with a small enough bell to let you utilize the see thru rings really limits what you can do with the rig and kind of defeats the purpose of having the irons ava. The quick detach option is not a bad idea. I would go with this because Ruger went really cheap on the mounting options. I have done this to 3 10/22's an it's night and day difference in getting a solid mount. It's from a competitor, "kinda, but not something SWFA carries" http://www.tacticalinc.com/1022-picatinny-scope-railbrfor-ruger-factory-receivers-with-oversize-brfont-colorblue8x32-screw-attachmentfont-p-1433.html It makes a big difference using the larger screws to mount it and you won't be stripping out the flimsy holes Ruger uses. You can get the tap from T.I. or Lowes, or Sears etc. 10 minutes work and you're good to go. I wouldn't be willing to try quick detach rings on the factory base, too flimsy. Best of luck man, keep us posted. |

I will be trying the NDS-26 rear sight and scope rail on one of my 10/22s. That rifle currently wears Tech-Sights, which are nice, but I want to try mounting a mini red dot in frontof the rear aperture. You could probably do the same with a scope, just make sure it has enough eye relief. |
