I recently picked up a sako 85 grey wolf used in 338 fedral. It came with leupold ring mounts that look like they have less than desireable holding power. Has anyone been using these mount and with what success? Ohh and the scope will be a 4.5x14x44 zeiss conquest .

Thanks in advance

IMO, the Leupy Sako ringmounts aren't very good. Sako does make their own ringmounts, which are fine, but pricey. I'd suggest you go with the Talley mounts. Gently tap the bases (I use a small wood block) onto the tapered dovetails, and snug up the screw. Then insert the rings...you're good to go. BTW, welcome to O.T.

Welcome

If we're not suppose to eat animals...how come they're made of meat?

Not to argue but I would be interested in what you don't like about them specifically. I have the 2 piece Optilocks and think they are too high both is measurement and price. They are also heavy and the screws heads strip if you look at them wrong.

I spent weeks researching options for the Sako 75 and went with the Leupold ringmounts because it was the lowest height option plus they had very good reviews from guys at the Sako collectors club including one guy using them on a 375 H&H.I have tried the fit of the bases which seem good but I have not mounted my scope yet as I am still waiting on it to ship. Please let me know if there is a real problem with the Leupolds before I waste time on them.

My second choice was either Conetrols or the Optilock ringmounts, leaning toward Optilock ringmounts despite the crap screws as I can't hardly see the sense in using another set of bases on a rifle with built in bases.

I wasn't trying to mislead anyone. IMO, the Leupy ringmounts seemed cheesy and did not appear to me as being the usual Leupold quality. I do agree about the soft screws Sako uses...but they can easily be replaced. I also tried Conetrols. They looked great, worked great but were expensive and somewhat of a pain to mount up. I had to work the bases a bit to get a good fit on the tapered dovetails. The Talley's seemed to be a good compromise (although some don't like vertically split rings). To each his own I guess.

I actually own a sako 75 also that has opti locks which seem fine they were on the rifle when i bought it. These leupold ring mounts just resemble someting that would go on a rim fire. Im gonna try them just because i have them and they wee free , but at the first sign of trouble I'll order the talleys

I would agree that the Leupolds seem very insubstantial compared to the Optilocks.I haven't used the Talley mounts but they look well built as well. The only reason I wanted to give the Leupolds a chance was because I could mount the scope lower with them than the other options except maby the Conetrols.Every option I looked at was some sort of compromise.I have been very frustrated trying to find the perfect mounts for my Sako. The Optilock Ringmounts would have fit the bill perfectly for me if you could get them lower and with good screws.

Agree with RH Clark on the Opti's. Good, solid mount but too dang high, (elevation AND price) and I despise those soft screws.

Conetrol mounts that Ric mentioned are so classic with superb quality. Damn shame we don't mention those more around here when folks ask about Sako mounts.

I beat the bejeebers out of my stainless Leupold Ring Mounts on a .300 WM M75. They worked well, but the Talleys won out.

S & K also makes a bases and mounts (similar in design to Conetol).  They are a good option if you really want you scope as low as possible.  I also have the Talley's and they are very nice.  The only problem I have with the Talley's is that the front base mounts pretty far up the dovetail.  This can make it difficult to get the scope mounted far enough back to achieve proper eye relief.
