Hi, I'm a newbie as far as pistol optics go.  I all-of-sudden decided that I would like to mount some optics on a Ruger security six .357.  I will use this for shooting targets and possibly deer.  Obviously it would be under 100 yards.  What optic should I get.  I have a budget of around $150.  I have looked at the Simmons and Weaver 2x scopes.  Also at the ATN Ultra sight.  I'm just looking for some advice.  Would something like a reddot or reflex sight be more for me or do I need a scope.  Any and all suggestions would be great.

Thanks

Trade it, if you want to hunt with a scope.  You have a better choice of mounts and often a better action.  You would be better off spending the 150  for an action job and getting the forcing cone cut.  If you have money left over then have grips made to fit your hand.  The gun you have is Ok, but is going nowhere in value. It is a good gun for things that go bump in the night, but little else.  When the day is done you still have a Ruger (There lots of reasons nobody races DA rugers).

If it were a Blackhawk it would be differant.  By the time you buy a mount, rings, and you should also figure a little shop time to get the stuff mounted; not much left over for a scope.  You can have more in the scope than the gun is worth.  The sum of the parts would be less than the gun by itself.

This is not one of the better guns to scope. What barrel length? The biggest problem here is the caliber. If the barrel is too short the scope will stick out over the end.  Weaver makes a tension mount for the security for about $50. Then another $100 for a low end scope or dot would still put you high on the fun factor. Silver I'm not sure what you mean by a better action, Rugers (although I prefer the older S&W) are certainly adequate for hunting as they come out of the box-I know I've done it and 357 is just a good close to mid range target load so no real power problems here-seems like the guy just wants to mess around.

  Dale,

That's exactly why I'm doing it.  Just to have some fun.  I call in coyotes to 15-thirty yards, I just thought shooting them with a pistol would add a little challenge.  Also, what could be more fun than sneaking up on a deer into pistol range.  Call me crazy or impractile, but I'm only 26.  Silver maybe in 10 years I'll agree with you, but right now I just want to have some fun.

Burris 2x

Weaver 4x

Which of these scopes would be best for what I want to use it for.  Thanks.  Dale the gun has a six inch barrel and for coyotes I'll be using 125gr bullet and for deer 158gr.

The S&W  actions have a more neutral point of aim, where Ruger's natural point of aim is low. Now add a scope to it.   The Smiths can be slicked up much better and you can get a better roll in shooting them. Ruger seems to go into a hissy fit if you ask them to do an action job, where Smith asks duty or target? Ruger has a long freebore to limit liablity, which limits accuracy as well.

I think we all like to "mess around" so I hold that against no one.  Why else be here?  Most of us also have only so much "toy money".  Dollar for Dollar to do what he REALLY wants he would be better off trading. They are still making the Smiths.  The Ruger, while plain jane, is a classic as it is, but hard to get stuff for.  Mess with it and you get what? Franken Gun  Why go through the extra hassle?

I'd go with the Burris.  You're 357 doesn't have bad recoil but it is sharp, and the Burris will handle it.  I shot lots of .454 rounds with one until I switched to a 2-7 Burris.  The only problem with the 2X20 is light transmission; when it starts to get dark you can't see through it.

If I was after coyotes at close range I would use a red dot type scope. You should be able to find a mount that will go to weaver base from there you can attach anything. Note cheap red dot scopes do not strike the same point of impact if your head is not in exactly the same position each time - look at the aimpoint demo.

Note: Not a good choice of pistols to scope.  I've shot deer at 100 yds with a 4in barrel .357 with open sights.

These pistols are made for self defense and should come on target fast. The two scopes above will work but do yourself a favor and dont go over 2x. Cheap scopes will not hold up on handguns.
