Ive come down to two options for my dads 12ga slug gun.

Either: Leupold VXI 1-4 shotgun/muzzleloader
or   Vortex Diamond back 1.75-5 rifle scope

I was given the idea of the vortex by someone on here, but I wonder if it will hold up like a scope that was made for that hard kick.  Im sure they both would be just fine, but does one or the other have an edge??

It could come down to something as 'small' as the warranty.  I know vortex will replace your scope if you run it over with your car.  I looked at leupolds warranty and it said to be for factory defects, but forever.

leupold will back their products, but they take their time.

i'd say the vortex is a superior scope anyway.

So the fact that the leupold is labeled a shotgun scope and the vortex is labeled a rifle scope probably doesnt matter at all.  I really dont know.

Actually it does make a difference as there will typically be longer eye relief with a shotgun scope.
I would consider this scope also:
Nikon 1.65-5x36 SlugHunter Shotgun Scope BDC 200 Nikon 1.65-5x36 SlugHunter Shotgun Scope
Stock # - NIK8445
  • Matte
  • BDC 200
  • 1"
  • eye relief 5 inches
$209.95

They are both great. They both take care of their customers and optics.
I think you have a winner either way.
I'm a little partial to the Dback, I have five of them.
And it can sustain the recoil of a shotgun.

Thanks guys,
I wanted to make sure his next scope would do better than the bushnell trophy he has.  He placed the research in my hands and letting him down isnt an option, thats why I asked here.

It may be a while, but Ill post up some results and opinions of which scope I get for him.

that one is on my list too.  The only reason I didnt add it to my question was that the nikons eye relief is a little too precise for my liking.  I actually looked at one of these at my local shop, and compared to the leupold you really need to be at that precise point or your picture is way smaller.  Maybe that wouldnt matter if it was mounted, but it did by picking it up.  The leupold was a bit more forgiving, and I havent picked the dback.  Though, the nikon was very bright with very nice glass.

ill have to take him to the shop and see which one he likes
