Thanks to Chris for his advice over many years (and more recently to others on here), I have some very nice alpha  glass  in both scopes and binoculars. (most always used glasss off the sample list)  I realize how fortunate I am and appreciate all I have learned on here.

Anyway, I've saved over time for a new scope for both my son and me. Everytime I think I'm ready to make a decision, I read so much on here that I start second guessing myself. Sound familiar?  For instance, I usually decide to get the Leica ER 2.5-10x42. Then I read several topics on here praising the Swaro Z6 1.7-10x 42. Equally deserving praise is easily found from the Zeiss guys. Then the suggestion usually found in these columns is why not save some $ and go with Kahles?

There seems to be alot of support and commentary for the Z6, Victory, and Kahles. I have not found the same amount of support nor the enthusiasm for the Leica. (At least not from the seemingly endless list of  reviews I have read.) Considering that SWFA's rating scale has consistantly placed the Leica ER at the very top with the Z6 and Victory, and given the ERs weight, eye relief, fov, warranty and especially the price ($1399 new on here) it just seems the ER lacks the following/support on here. Maybe I have missed something or just don't have the knowledge yet, but it makes me wonder what's up with this perception.

I know all these top scopes are wonderful technological marvels. I'd just like know if you guys hold the Leica on the same equal footing with the others, or are the differences that are important to you keeping your rating of the Leica below the others?

As a Christmas present to my self Big Smile,  I bought a Leica ER 2,5-10x42.
It will see service on my Ruger Hawkeye African in 375 Ruger.

I have tried and used a couple of  scopes on this rifle ( an old Vari X III 2,5-8 x36, Zeiss Classic 1,5-6x42 and Zeiss Duralyt 2-8x42) but none really made me happy.
Then I came  across this good Christmas offer on the Leica, and as a Leica user for many years with both binoculares and rangefinder as well as camera, I decided to give it a try.

So far the scope is mounted on the rifle with Rugers medium 30 mm rings and has not been to the range yet.
But I have compared it with a Zeiss Victory 2,5-10 x 50 on a field behind my house both in daylight and dusk, and the Leica is right up there with the Zeiss in both clearity, contrast, color retention and light transmission.

The only little drawback is the #4A reticle which is a bit thin to my aging eyes.
I whish I could have got the one with the #1 reticle, but they where not imported to Norway.

This rifle has been with me to Namibia once (with the Duralyt scope) but the main use is moose hunting here in Norway which is daylight hunting, so I belive the reticle will be ok after all.
I also like the 100 mm / 4" eye relief.
The overall impression of the scope is very good.

I will write a report when I have had a chance to test it on the range.

Lecia has a good reputation.  Not many if any complaints I've seen from users either.  Both CFII and Brady used Leica recently to take a couple nice trophies on a hunt. Both pleased with the performance of the scopes as the conditions were not opitmal for either if I recall.  I'd PM brady or CFII about Leica, or just ring them at SWFA

You have nothing to worry about with the Leica. When I used mine I ended up being in a situation @ over 350 yards in the last 10 minutes of daylight. The Leica did its job and more. They are great scopes hands down can run side by side with Swaro or Zeiss. Here is a link to our post with the hunt details.

So far, I have managed to acquire a couple of Swaros, a S&B Summit and a Leica ER. They are all top notch and will do a great job. The Summit is a 1" tube. The differences are minor (and personal) such as reticle choices. The Leica has the AquaDura hydrophobic coating which the Swaro and S&B do not have. The Zeiss has the LotuTec. That alone may be the difference worth deciding one way or the other. The Leica is priced right to be sure. Good luck.
