Hello, I cant decide if I want to cough up the extra doe to get the same quality glass with adjustable focus, I am looking at 3x9s for whitetail and steel. I have never owned a scope with AO so I am pretty ignorant here. I got all excited about the burris timberline 4.5x14 until I saw the fov, eek.

Hey xot3ric. Im not sure if youve done it or not but if you type in AO vs. non AO or something like that you will find alot of info. As far as my experience the only scope I have had with AO was a cheapy that went to 12x. At least on that scope it made a big difference at high power.

You don't need AO for hunting deer with 3-9.

+2 Not only is it not needed it can be a hindrance if you are trying to focus the AO before taking a shot. |

I tried to do a search for this topic, but came up with nothing. Any steel plinkers out there that want to also give their 2 cents? My Dad has access to some property where I could do some nice 200-400 yrd plinking. I am planning on getting a 12in gong. Will it be difficult to hit that bad boy without AO at 9x? Thanks for the white tail feedback everyone!

My opinion...I think you'll be fine out to 400 yds with a 9x. We don't shoot 12'' gongs, but we do shoot 1/2 gallon milk jugs at 400 yds with no problems. I have 1 scope with a AO (4-12x40) but it's on a rifle I don't shoot much. The AO is just one more thing to adjust so I'd rather not have to mess with it when it comes to hunting situations. My other rifles have 3-9x40's on 'em. Unless you're doing extreme long range hunting/shooting...I think a 3-9 is more than sufficient, but if you want high power scope (12 power & up), AO is probably the way too go. |

I agree not necessary unless you will switch the scope to a .22 and shoot under a hundred yards. Then it might be nice.

sorry I didn't address the the plinking part......just assumed we killed it with the whitetails... anyway.... AO is not needed unless you are using high mag. very close.... like say 9x or more at 10 - 15 yards.... or high mag at very long distance... like say 15x at 400.
