I'm looking to scope my AR (16") for hunting hogs, coons, bobcats, coyotes, etc. A lot of my hunting is done at night. I use a weapon mounted light and moonlight. Currently, all shots are under 200 yards, most from 10 to 75, but I like the idea of some bdc points in case I get to hunt on more open land. I want an illuminated reticle. I like the looks of the circle dot style reticles (Burris XTR, Millett DMS, etc) as I think they'd be great on a charging or accidentally jumped hog, but have the small dot for precision shots. I've considered everything from the $150 Optisan Mamba 1-4 on up. From the looks of it, I'd love to get the new Bushnell Tactical 6500, but I'd prefer to spend less than $800 ($1000 max) for the scope and a one piece QR mount such as a PEPR. Suggestions?

The pig plex reticle looks interesting but how do you think it compare to these:
Hawke endurance 1-4x $339 Vortex viper HS 1-4x $479 Weaver tactical 1-5x $659 Super Sniper 1-4x $799 Burris XTR 1-4x $579 on sample list IOR 1.1-4x tactical $699 on sample list Nikon 1.1-4x monarch African w/ illum #4 $449 on sample list Btw, I will set and forget the turrets on this scope. |

I have the Leatherwood 14CMR on my CZ550 .375 H&H Magnum. Good price, good bottom end illumination, semicircle dot reticle w/BDC draws the eye to the target, excellent eye relief, everyone I've showed it to has liked the optical quality. I would like it even more if it were a bit shorter, but it is quite a value. I had only intended to test it out on the .375, but I believe it is a permanent fixture. Can't imagine that I would need anything else... |

Burris Fullfield Tac 30 1-4 with illuminated reticle calibrated to 62 grain drop. Extrmely clear, very happy with mine just dont have any more close quarters ARs for it, just varminters left. For 300 bucks think it would be hard to beat. Would be worth a look imo. |

I do a lot of low light hog hunting
My experence with BDC or circle type illuminated "tactical" type reticles is that they obscure your view of the target in very low light and do more harm than good. Personally, I suggest running a 200-225 yard zero and that gets you from point blank out to say 250 yards with a dead hold and you can hold 6" high for a 300 yard shot. I would stay away from 20-24mm objectives and go bigger. Given your needs and budget I would suggest a VXR 2-7 #4 I run a Wilson Combat 6.8 with a S&B 1.5-6x42 Fantastic scope of course but very expensive The 2-7 VXR tested shockingly close into the night and my brother runs one on his 6.8 |

You've just about convinced me. The more I read and the more reticles I stare at, the more I'm thinking I need to keep it simple and a tad more magnification wouldn't hurt.
Are there any good choices in the 1.5-6 category with an illuminated #4 reticle? I've read good things about the new Meopta Meostar R1, but I can't find it for sale. I'm guessing it will be at least $800. The old Burris EuroDiamond looks good on paper, but I read where you and a few others had problems.
Did you do a review on the VXR 2-7? Can you post a link?

Buy the EuroDiamond 1.5-6 with the illuminated German#4. Track one down LNIB. If I had to do it today I'd certainly look into the Burris SXSix 2-12 illuminated and get detachable mounts. If get the 1.5-6 do the MPBR range of 250 yds to kill anything from coyote up ranging out to 325 yds of so (308 or so calibre). Hunting is not benchrest.

I use the SS 1-4x Donut reticle. Fast aqusition on 1x, see a longer shot? Grab the throwlever and bump her up to 4x. Fast, easy and extremely tough.
My hog gun, like most, take a beating. My SS hasn't let me down yet. Just my opinion. Lots of great choices. Check out the SampleList and see if you run across something that catches your eye. The Leatherwood CMR has been a hit, great scope and an AR style mount as a package deal.
