I just picked up a new Weatherby Vanguard .223 and I am now looking at scopes.
I have Leupold VX-3 and Zeiss Conquest on (4) other guns to give you an idea of what I am used to. I plan to use this rig for coyotes in South Texas where shots can range from 50-300 yards.
My VX-3's have the CDS System and my Zeiss are just straight Duplex.
I am thinking that the Boone & Crockett reticle will be more practical for varming hunting since most shots at coyotes are quicker and don't give you the time to play with a range finder and CDS dial.
I could go with the new VX-1, 4x12x40 with Long Range Reticle for $300, VX-3 3.5x10x40 B&C for around $550 or jump to the VX-4 4.5x14x40 B&C for $600.
This is a gun that I will probably shoot more at the range than in the field as I only shot 3 coyotes this year.
If I save the $300 I can use it on a new rangefinder?
Thanks for you ideas?

I would get the Varmint Hunter's Reticle. It is much more usefull as a BDC than the B&C

Agree with Ur, why not just go with a Mil/Mil scope or if you choose a Moa/Moa matched scope?
With a little work on your part - if you use different loads or just one favorite load on your gun, you are able to use it similar to a BDC type reticle. Spend some range time with your load or loads and work out your dope for your gun. Now if you have turrets that match your reticle you have the option to dial in correction or hold over, giving you the best of both worlds.
If it were me, and this is just my opinion, I would first make sure what ever scope I was after has matching turrets and reticle. It just makes everything that much easier.

Some that would probably compete with the vx-1 might be the vortex viper 4-12 for about $399 or the nikon buckmasters. I also had a burris FFII 4.5x14 that was a pretty nice scope for the money and they turn up on the sample list for $200 or so frequently.

What do you like about the varmint versus the bdc?
Does it show up good against a hide in low light?

The varmint reticle has better wind compensation, and it doesn't have those strange thickening lines. It has windage lines on the main crosshair, so you can also dial and hold. My buddy has one on a Cooper .223 for the same uses, and he really likes it. It is kind of thin, but still pretty useable in low light.
I can't remember what the subtensions are, but you are going to want to verify what your actual yardages are for the drop crosshairs.

If you could get a VXR Patrol 3-9 for 500 would it be worth it over the SS? I am looking for a 3 gun scope because I have some eye issues and a scope with an illuminated reticle would really help me. With quick shots.

IMO, for shots out to 300 yards you don't need any fancy reticles. A 3-9/3-10 with regular plex, rifle sighted in at MPBR, and you're there. Very simple.

Howdy snuff,
Since you like Conquests, have you checked their Rapid Z-600 reticles? If you are really into speedy target acquisition, the #4a reticle would be great and you could learn holdover... not a biggie with .223 effective range. I really like my Rapid-z600 3-9. Conquests have a $50 rebate. right now. http://swfa.com/Zeiss-Conquest-Rifle-Scopes-C239.aspx?s=Name%20ASC&p=0 Hello moagm316, Some 3-gun competitors I know use a lower- power range to compete. like 1-4x. SWFA has an Optisan illuminated package deal right now... http://swfa.com/Optisan-1-4x24-Mamba-EAR30-Mount-Combo-P51887.aspx I know nothing about Leupold VXR Patrol scopes, but those 1.25-4 patrols and standard VXRs (less expensive) look like great little scopes and some reticles, like the illuminated 4a are high- visibility. I don't think there is a comparable $500 scope to the SS 3-9, but they aren't illuminated. |

I don't know JG, some of those low-BC varmint bullets in .223 start seeing some drop and drift out there at 300.

how about one of these... you'll have plenty of $$ left over for a nice range finder. Put one of these on my son's Rem 700 .308. Been happy with it so far.
