Hello all! I just purchased a Remington 700 SPS tactical .308. Right now
I have a Burris Fullfield II 3.5x-10x50 LRS on it. I'd like to get
something with a bit better glass and a bit more magnification. Right
now I'm looking at the Burris MTAC 4.5-14x42 for $550, the Vortex Viper
HS 4-16x50 for $600 and the Nikon M308 4-16x42 for $550. I have a range
near me that allows shots out to 800 yards, so I'd like something that
will work out that far. I'd appreciate any info you can give me on these
scopes or others you'd think would fit my situation/budget. Thank you
all in advance!

I would go with the Viper HS Vortex has the best warranty and good glass at that price point. If you don't care about having a fixed power I would look at the SWFA SS 10x42 or 12x42 the mil-mils are on preorder.

I have the same rifle. Great little gun. As far as the scope goes, I would look at the vortex you mentioned earlier. Even possibly saving another $100, you could get the PST which will have illumination and windage turrets as well.
One thing I will tell you about the gun, not sure if yours is still stock or not, but bedding a steel rod into the forearm will greatly help the accuracy of the gun. The hogue stocks they come with have a tendency to flex with any pressure from a bag or bipod on them. I simply dremelled out a channel wide enough to fit a 3/8" threaded rod in mine and then epoxied it in there with some 24 hour clear epoxy, picked the rod and epoxy up at lowes. Saw a big improvement in mine right after I did that.

I'd opt for another stock, all together. Might look at a Bell and Carlson or a HS take off. There's one for sale now at Sniper Central's For Sale forum. I also have this rifle, sans the Hogue stock and in .223.

Would a couple carbon fiber arrow shafts provide similar results?

In my opinion for 600.00 range the weaver tactical 3-15 is hard to beat...Also would look at the ss 3-9x42...both these scopes are mil/mil FFP. The weaver I looked through the other day at last light was as good as any optic i have looked through up to about $1000.00.

The Weaver Tacticals, SS 3-9, and Viper HS LR/PSTs are good options for this price range and application.

The SS is a great scope. If you are stuck on more magnification, the Viper HS is probably good, but the extra 100 for the PST might be worth it. I love the FFP scope and as funds allow as as the scopes come out, I will switch almost all of my guns to FFP.
