With bows getting faster and faster, and arrows evolving just as fast.
What do you look for in an arrow? Taking into account, now there are arrows for both Hunting and Target. Since the weight and speed on mine are high and fast, I prefer a heavier spine, like 350. What are you guys looking for?

I shot ACC's for years. They are a great combination...very straight and precise but rather costly.

Cost-effectiveness. I shoot GTs. Most are Expeditions, and I have to shoot the heaviest they make because of draw-length and draw weight. I even got better results dropping to 100gr cutters because it reduced shaft flex at the release. I'm not worried about arrow drop at 50yds. The heavier the arrow and broadhead, the better the penetration. Period.

Gold Tips all the way. "Tuffest" arrows I've ever seen. XT Hunters are my preferred. Tried the Pro Hunters but for the cost difference I couldn't see stayin up there. The XT Hunters are as good as any for consistancy and durability. I just buy the shafts then cut wrap and fletch em myself. With the Rage broadheads no deer is gittin away.

I must admit I am a speed freak
I hunt with easton flatline 400's. They are 7.4 GPI. They zip right through the ribs of a whitetail with a Rage 2 blade. Havent hit a shoulder blade with one yet and dont plan to!!! For often suggest beman ics hunters for best bang for your buck arrow.

Usually when I am looking for an arrow I first need to figure out where my boys have put it. I buy them they disappear I buy them they disappear. you get the idea.

Excellent advice, Brandon. I use Easton ST Axis FMJ 340's (with 100 gr G5 Montec broadheads). They have all the advantages of both carbon (stiffness for a given diameter, smaller diameter, penetration, don't take a permanent bend) and aluminum (straighter, slicker surface, quieter over rests, easier to fletch). I used to be a devoted Easton ACC fan, but I think FMJ's are superior. Like the ACC's, they are very durable. If anything, I think they may even be more durable than ACC's because having aluminum over carbon rather than the reverse helps prevent the carbon from splintering. The smoother aluminum outside surface draws quieter than carbon too. Yet, with carbon on the inside, they have the stiffness and bend resistance carbon is known for. They are very consistent in weight and spine and they are heavy for diameter, so they penetrate extremely well. They group well out of 4 different bows. I had to stop shooting at the same spot on the target with multiple arrows because I was destroying too many nocks and vanes. I haven't found an arrow yet that lasts as long as FMJ's do, and I went through about a 10 year period of trying different brands and styles every year for both hunting and 3D. I'm through testing arrows. Easton FMJ's do everything I want an arrow to do and keep doing it longer. |

Ted-
How do you like the G5's. I have heard nothing but great things on the Easton Axis, great arrows for sure. I have been using CE, for a while. Right now, I am using, Carbon Express Piledriver 350's with Grim Reaper 125 gr mechanicals. Hopefully this will be the year to get my first deer ever. We'll see. Thanks Brandon, that is along the lines of information that I was looking for. Also wanted to get some ideas from others too.

So far, so good. I've killed about a dozen hogs with the Montec. No deer with it so far, only because I haven't seen a buck during archery season that I was interested in shooting since I've switched to them. I like the fact it's one piece, so it's not possible for a blade to come loose and there's nothing to replace. They aren't as sharp as I'd prefer when new, but a few strokes across a diamond sharpener solves that. They have shot to the same POI out of my bows as my field points. They are extremely tough! I absolutely love the Easton Axis series arrows! Unless they discontinue them in the future, I think I may have finally found the one piece of equipment that's earned my loyalty to the point I use nothing else! |

+1 for the G5 montecs!!! I got to see one go through an elk at 60 yards!
Plus, the montecs have practice broadheads which helped my cousin and I fine tune everything before our hunt.
As far as arrows.. Well, that's a long story. But we ended up victory 300 VAPs.
