OK guys here is the story: Went out to the shooting range today to sight in a new scope, on the new rifle. Boar sighted the scope and leveled the reticle, but when it came time to fine-tune shot placement via the scope, I ran out of adjustments. So I unmounted the scope, moved the bases, and reset everything. Repeated boar sighting and leveling. I am still going to run out of adjustments to fine-tune the scope. What is the best way to mount the bases and scope with minimal adjustments to the scope? I must be doing something wrong. Is there a way to shim the bases or level the bases to minimumize the use of the elevation turret. Please help. PS: 300 RUM, leica ER scope with elevation turret and leupold DD rings and bases.

Something seems a muck. You shouldn't be running out to elevation. Do you have another set up with 30mm rings you can check the scope with? May be the rings your using. I'd start by testing each component with known stuff to eleminate each variable. |

You can shim the base if needed by using a small piece or two cut from a pop can. The other possible is that Burris makes some signature dual dovetail rings that use plastic inserts which are available in Plus 10 moa and Plus 20moa.

What brand rifle are you mounting the scope on? Are you using a 1 or 2 piece base.

Thanks for the responses.
The 300 RUM is a remington 700 and the bases are Leupold 2 piece base.

What adjustments did you run out? Elevation or windage or both?

I ran out of both elevation and windage adjustments.
If I remember correctly, I was able to semi-correct for windage but I would max out the elevation adjustment.
Regarding 2 piece bases, do you guys level each base? Or how do you make sure the base is straight on the receiver?

With the description that you provided you need to follow the qouted advice above. As bad as your problems are you need a methodical approach to isolate components. It could be just rings or bases or both. |

The elevation turret on your scope has a zero stop. Did you run out of "down"adjustment? If yes, did you reset the turret to allow for more adjustment downward?

The first round I ran out of "up" adjustment and after the secound round I was probably 10-15 clicks away from being maxed out on the "up" adjustment.

The first thing I would do is try a different scope in the same mounts.
For things like this I more commonly run into problems with mounts than with scopes although both are possible. ILya

OK, thanks for the suggestions. I don't have another 30mm scope. I was thinking about swapping to Burris Zee or Talley remington mounts and see what happens.

Thats a good place to start. It sounds like your rings are mismatched somehow. If your Leupold bases are rear windage adjustable you should have no problem there even though it shouldn't require much adjustment to begin with. There are several variablies with the rings though and as unlikely as it may be for new packaging, the rings may be mismatched. If trying different mounts doesn't correct the problem then there is issue with the scope. Again unlikely unless the scope has a history. Good Luck! Let us know how it goes.

I would recommend some Talley light weights. Either that or go with a rail and tactical rings.
Obviously the Talley's are less money. The TPS set-up is about start of the good stuff, but it gets much more expensive from there. I have never trusted dual dovetail rings...

If you are running out of windage as well, I would check the rifle to see if it is receiver is drilled correctly. i have a rifle that isn't but I corrected that with some zee rings from burris. Takes some playing around, but they are great rings.

Not sure I would recommend Talley light weight for a RUM.
My first thought is dump the 2-piece base and go with a 1-piece, that solves many problems I have seen (but not all.) As Koshkin said, these things usually come down to mounts, but scopes have failed too. More data is needed.

Wow, thanks for all of your input!
How would I check to see if the receiver is drilled correctly?
My plan is to change the mounts to start off with.
Again, thanks for the advise

I take it that the scope that you are using has a 30 mm tube.
Scopes with 30 mm tubes usually have enough adjustment range to be on target at 100, if not something is just not right. Burris Signature rings in the 1 inch size have eccentric plastic inserts that will compensate for off drilled scope base holes. I don't know if 30 mm Burris Signature rings are available with the same eccentric features. My suggestions would be to make sure everthing is tightened up to specs, try bore sighting, then put up a very large piece of paper (like 3X3 feet) at 100 yds with a small bull centered on the paper then try to get a group. This will check out your scope, rifle, and ammo. Your goals will be to get on target @ 100 with scope adjustments approximately mid adjust so you will have enough adjustments to allow for extended ranges. If the group is way low the back of the scope needs to be raised, if way high the front of the scope needs to be raised. If far to the left or right the scope windage screw can be used to pull the scope left or right. My thoughts would be to get a set of Burris Signature rings in any event - the rotary dove tail rings will work with Leupold bases. Shimming either base up can create a situation where the rings are missaligned and twist the scope left, right, down, or up. The slick plastic Burris inserts swivel inside their steel rings and prevent out of line rings from damaging your scope. If you can get a group on the barn door size paper backing try shimming either the front or rear base up, and then use the opposing windage screws on the scope base with your new rotary dovetail 30mm Burris signature rings. Most of my rifles have shims cut from aluminum pop cans with one drop of locktight applied to the threads. Sloped, or angled Weaver style bases that raise the front of the scope for extended ranges are available, they are pricey and won't fix windage problems Usually most newer rifles have precisely made receivers and mount base holes. Some of my ancient Mauser rifles have many pop can shims used with Burris Signature rings |

Correction to above - the extended range bases tilt the scope up at the end not raise the front.
