Hey everyone, just joined the forum today but have been reading through and watching for a few weeks now. I have been learning alot sofar! I was hoping to get some help/guidance for a varmint scope. I will be shooting the Savage 12BTCSS in .204 calibur and will be shooting coyotes at most up to 400yards but once i improve my skills i would like to do some 600-700 yard shooting at the range. I have heard nothing but good things about the sightron siii and would like to get it in 8-32x56mm. Now does that seem fit for my set-up? Also if there is another scope that you would suggest that is under $1k let me know!Thank you greatly!Brendon

personally i dont recommend anything higher than 3-4x on the low end for coyote hunting. they can really sneak up on you, especially if you hunt them alone.

thats what id do as well, maybe even take a pistol in case.. as far as that scope goes though, 32x in a 56mm objective only equals 1.75mm exil pupil, your not gonna be able to use the higher powers in lower light conditions very well. |

I have the 5-20x Minox and a Sightron 4-16 SII Big Sky. I'd rank them pretty even. I'd think the 5-20 would be plenty of magnification and adjustment for your .204's coyote-shooting range and 600 yard targets. Also, the 1" tube would save a few ounces of weight to carry around in the field.

I would love to hear a comparison of the 2 scopes the SIII 8-32 and the 6-30 Minox.
In fact I would love to hear from ILya on this topic if he has any experience with this high of magnification in the Minox... The Sightron without question is my choice of high magnification for under 1k until he tells me otherwise. |

CFII had a minox on his 204 he was using for a while. Made hits out to 600 I think with it with no problems.

I've had both. I couldn't get rid of the Minox fast enough . Glass was lower end Schott glass. Sightron glass is good enough but mechanically is head and shoulders above the Minox. Zeiss HD5 beats them both.

As well it should, at twice the price! Not a fair comparison. How did you determine Sightron was mechanically better than Minox? Did your Minox not track properly, not hold zero, or...? What does "lower end Schott glass" mean? Schott is one of several major suppliers of optical glass used in many different optics. The raw glass source has very little impact on the optical performance of the end product; it's what the manufacturer does with that glass and how it's integrated into the overall design that's important. I have a Minox ZA5 1.5-8X32 w/ Versa-Plex reticle. It's by no means a perfect optic, but there are always compromises that must be made with any optic, especially at a lower-mid price point. It has a fair amount of barrel distortion (noticeable when panning) below about 5X, adjustments feel a bit mushy, and the turrets are rather tall for such an otherwise compact scope. However, after repeated head-to-head comparisons I've done with multiple other scopes, center field resolution is fully equivalent to Zeiss Conquest and tracking has been spot on after repeated "box testing." When taken as a whole, even including its weaknesses, I can't think of another scope that I believe outperforms it at the same or lower price, and it has a 5:1 zoom ratio. I get that different people see things differently and have different likes and dislikes. But I'm curious how you were able to tell another scope is "head and shoulders" better mechanically than the Minox unless it failed in some way, and why you would include a $900 - $1000 HD5 in a discussion of sub-$500 scopes. |

Its just the way I describe things. Glad you like your Minox.

Hey, it's cool and perfectly understandable if you didn't like it, but in all due respect, you didn't "describe things," which was my point. Not everyone likes the same stuff, and I'm not saying my opinion is more valid than anyone else's, but if you're going to harshly criticize something, shouldn't you be more specific so someone considering one can make a better informed decision?
My question is how did you determine that the Sightron is "head and shoulders better mechanically" than the Minox you had? That's a very definitive statement. How did you arrive at this conclusion? Did your Minox fail in some way? That kind of feedback is helpful to the forum. To say something is mechanically inferior without specifying why isn't helpful to someone seeking advice. What aspect of its optics did you not like that led you to conclude it had "lower end" glass, keeping its price point into consideration? Several very knowledgeable reviewers here and elsewhere had exactly the opposite conclusion. |

I have a Sightron II 4-16x42 standard duplex on my Ruger .243 - very bright and clear scope. I have a Sightron II Big Sky 6-24x42 with a dot reticle on my Tikka .204 - brighter and clearer, but the dot is a bit difficult to see in low light. Both have AO and is nice when the woodchuck "pops" into view.
I just put a SS 3-15x42 mrad on my AR - really, really nice! It has the side focus which is a tiny bit harder to get exact than the larger AO on the Sightron's front bell, but it gets there eventually. Based on my experience with the two Sightrons, I can only image the SIII would be great . . . ************************************************************** I just realized this post is 8 months old - duh.

I have the Sightron 8-32x56 and am very happy with it. However, I would not put it on a gun I planned to carry very far because it adds a lot of weight and bulk. I think I would opt for something a little smaller and lighter on a coyote gun.
But then again, when shooting at longer ranges, I do like that high magnification the 8-32 has available if needed. Good luck.
