Just bought a savage in 338 lapua and need to put a scope on it.  Looking to spend around the $1000 mark.  I have decided i want Moa turrets and retical.  Any help would be much appreciated.  I was looking at the SWFA 5-20 but I want MOA.

Thanks
Ryan

What are you going to use this rifle for and what are the min and max distances you intend to shoot?

this rifle will be used for shooting targets 300yds on out.  i have a place where i can reach as far as 950yds, but would like to shoot farther than that some day.  so i will say most days the rifle will be shot 300-600yds

I am not trying to start anything but all to often I see what are you intending to shoot with a .338LM.

It doesn't matter what, it will destroy anything it hits at any distance that you can see.  That and as of yet I haven't seen anyone 3 gun.

@950yards if he is targeting a hardened steel plate it will still penetrate.  The energy is still much more than most rifles at 300.

Ok so My suggestion is a Sightron SIII http://swfa.com/Sightron-6-24x50-SIII-30mm-Riflescope-P48419.aspx

As a very nice alternative to the SWFA SS this glass is the best your money can buy @ that price.  At 24x you have the clarity the SWFA has at 15-20X and that is saying something.

At 300yards a 6x is near perfect.

i have some ar500 targets.  they are .5in thick.  we will see what this does to that, but i dont think it will go through it.

so you think this will be a better fit than the 8-32 or the 10-50.   they are all pretty close it cost.

thanks for the response

I believe you will love to see what it does.

I think that the 8-32 and 10-50 are too much scope.  The brightness on the other hand with the larger objectives offer is a very nice trade off.

At 950 yards you will be looking at roughly 30-50% less.

It is your call.

Realize at 28x on the 32x and at about 38x on the 50x the image starts declining.  This is just how it is.  I spoke to someone with the March ($3k+)  and the same is true past 65 on the 80x..\

Taken from Wiki.

A little brief summary:

In 1983, Research Armament Industries (RAI) in the United States began development of a new, long-range sniper cartridge capable of firing a 16.2-gram (250 gr), 0.338-inch (8.6 mm) diameter bullet at 914 meters per second (3,000 ft/s) that could penetrate five layers of military body armor at 1,000 m (1,094 yd) and still make the kill.

The .338 Lapua is a dual-purpose anti-personnel and anti-materiel round, but its anti-materiel potential is limited, due to the bullet's lower kinetic energy compared with that of the .50 BMG's 35.64-to-55.08-gram (550.0 to 850.0 gr) projectiles. The loaded cartridge is 14.93 mm (0.588 in) in diameter (rim) and 93.5 mm (3.68 in) long. It can penetrate better-than-standard military body armor at ranges up to 1,000 meters (1,094 yd) and has a maximum effective range of about 1,750 meters (1,910 yd). Muzzle velocity is dependent on load and powder temperature and varies from 880 to 915 m/s (2,900 to 3,000 ft/s) for commercial loads with 16.2-gram (250 gr) bullets, which results in about 6,525 J (4,813 ft·lbf) of muzzle energy.

I would think a Bushnell 3.5-21x50 HDMR would be awesome on that.

i dont think i have access to the projectiles that the military does.  I have been  looking at all the different Sightron offerings and they do look quite nice.  My buddy is a big Sightron fan.  I was seeing if there were different choices other than those.  I will check out the Bushnell.

Vortex has a MOA/MOA that is close to your price range.

Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.
