So I shot about 100 rounds through my dad's 17 hmr this weekend, and darn it, I need one now.

Have the gun coming, now I want a good scope for it.

I used his burris timberline 4.5-14 X 32
I didn't like how sensitive the AO was, I seemed to be adjusting it a lot. I also didn't like how at above 10X the image through the scope was not clear.

I did like the AO, and the magnification, but I don't think I need anything over 10x.

Suggestions for a scope? I don't mind doing a 40mm objective lens. I wanted the mil dot type reticle, and don't want to spend a ton of money. Lets say under 200 for a starting point.

Vortex makes several different scopes with all or most of what you are looking for around your price range.  The Crossfire 4-12 x 50 with the Dead-Hold BDC has AO and is $199.95 at SWFA.  The next level up in optical quality Diamondback model has a 3-10 x 50 with Dead-Hold BDC but no AO for $249.95, a 4-12 x 40 with Dead-Hold BDC reticle and no AO for $199.95 and with AO for $299.95.  I have used the latter and was impressed with the optical quality for the price.  I have not tried the Crossfire series.  Vortex has a transferable lifetime warranty and excellent customer service.  A couple hours at the range and a box of ammo will determine what actual ranges match the BDC marking on the reticle.  I'm using a Nikon Monarch with BDC reticle on a Volquartsen .17 HMR and taped a range card on the eye box with my ranges that match the BDC markings. Where and when we go for ground squirrels and PDs temperatures pretty much limit magnification to 10x beyond which mirage becomes an issue along with shooting from cross sticks in the wind.
