I just picked up a Remington VSF in 6mm for varmits, shooting
600yds/1000yds, and to eventually turn into a semi custom and shoot
F-class.
I am planning on using Ken Farrell or Warne base and rings. The problem is what scope. I know that I will eventually step up to a S&B, Mark 4, or Nightforce. I can't do that till I become more consious about what I want and need. (AND justify to my wife as well as myself) I am wanting to spend somewhere in the $500 to $600 range. I am wanting 20 or 24x on the top end with side focus. i am wanting a side focus due to the fact that I wear glasses and do not shoot while wearing them. I am not sure about recticle and really have no preference at this point in time. I have thought about a Nikon Buckmaster, but would like to step up a little. I don't know enough about the Burris lines to make an informed decision but, I have considered them because they are typically highly recommended. I currently have a Sightron SII 4.5-14x42AO & an older Burris Signature 4-16x44AO. |

In your price range, your probably going to end up with a scope with a 1" tube. A 30mm tube is nice because they have more adjustments. But, they will probably blow your budget.
To shoot out to the ranges you mentioned with a 1" tube, you'll probably need a canted base. 20 MOA rails work for me. Canted rails are just nice to have anyway. You got the extra "up" when and if you need it.
Let's move on to scope.
The best 1" tubed, side focus version, laser etched reticle, fixed 4" eye relief, with the best optics in it's class, is the Zeiss Conquest. A little over the budget, but you may like it so well you wont feel the need to upgrade. They are that good. They are not quite as good as a S&B or US Optics, but a great bang for the buck.
Then there are the Burris Sig. and Nikon Monarch. Now the Burris scopes may offer side focus, but the Monarch is an AO. That AO is cool for me because I'm a lefty.
These two scopes are good to go. I have had more experience with the Nikon Monarch 5.5-16.5x44mm. Very good scope. I would recommend the Monarch over the Sig based on the fact that I have shot under it a lot.
I would try to stay away from Burris's or anyone elses "gimmick reticles". Varmint dot, mil dot, or plane 'ol Duplex for me. I'm a clicker.
Bushnell 4200 is a good choice too. Same features as the others and within your price range.
Best of luck!!!!!! |

Couple of things to keep in mind: Nightforce scopes are 10 oz heavier than a comparable (did I say that) Zeiss or Leo. Also their reticles are extremely thin, less than 1/8" subtension in the varmit reticles and wider as the illuminatiion is turned up. However their mildot is much better as it has circles rather than dots. Zeiss Conquest has plastic turrets, plastic power ring, plastic turret covers and is about 1-2 in longer than a comparable (did I say that) Nikon monarch (and as far as I can tell not any better). Look at a 6.5x20 40 mm Leo in duplex (or they will put anything you want in) 30 mm tube and side focus without a 20 MOA. rail . Long range shooting with 6mm is dubious, not really better than .22 centerifires as there are no match bullets and the Ballistic coefficients are too low although it makes an outstanding mountain goat gun. |

True. The Conquest does indeed have plastic turrets and caps. So what??? I was referring to the upper power ranges WITH target turrets. Shouldn't be an issue.
Leupolds have wire reticles, variable eye relief and most people agree that the glass is not as good as the Conquest.
All in all, I'd go Conquest. But, optics are VERY subjective so your milage may vary. |

Almost forgot, if you live in the world were counterclockwise lifts your shot, Conquest will make you relive the whole thing again. I think the target turrets are plastic also. The feature on conquest I like the most (at least the one above) is the range is printed on the focus knob and is very close to a laser rangefinder, making it a good choice for an AR-10 and why I kept it. As far as metal target knobs, I'll take em any time over plastic!!!!

I was already figuring that I would end up with a 1" tube so I was planning on the 20 moa suggestion.

On my 700 6mm I ran ran out of adjustments after about 400yrd with a 1" tube scope. After putting on a Leupold VXIII LR 8.25-25x50 with 30mm tubes no problem. What a great scope. I bought about 2 scopes before I got it right what a waste of money.

Nice setup! 1. Did you use a canted rail? If so, how many MOA. 2. Do you load your own? 3. What is that blue piece on your bolt? Did you replace the J-lock. |

300rem7, I did not use canted rail it has stock Leupold base and rings. The longist I have shot with it has been 650yrds missed the ground hog by inches the longist kill has been 485yrds. I do reload Berger 80gr bullets and IMR 4350 47.5gr it shoot about a 1/2" group at 200yrd. The blue bolt is that I replaced the factory lock. I wished it shot a lighter bullet but it shoots great.

Your 6mm oughtta get u to 600 yds. easily enuf, and with a faster twist barrel will get u to 1000 nicely. Depends on what u're gonna be shooting with it, of course. My handgun shooting partner just hit 1600 on a pr. dog last Oct. with an XP-100 in 6-284 with David Tubbs 115 gr. bullet in <10 shots. If you're shooting chucks way out there 105 A-max and up oughtta get u to +/-1000.
Nice rig Varmint700. |

It shoots good but I'm sending it off after ground hog season to have a barrel put on it. I have not made my mind up yet 6mm Imp or 6mm284. I have a friend has a 700 in 6mm284 and my brother in 6mm Imp both shoot great. Here is some pics of our group guns.
