Very important and interesting conversation. I do think Remington has yet to have anyone have this issue with a factory trigger that has NOT been manipulated/replaced. Below is the link to Remington's Response to the lib-loving CNBC report that their factory triggers were killing people.
Anyway, I am glad some of gurus can help each other out. OT is awesome.

I played with the sear engagement adjustment and I was able to lighten the trigger pull without the firing pin being released when I lock the bolt down. But, honestly, I wasn't really sure what I was doing. I tried to follow the instructions on resetting the sear engagement back to the factory setting given on the timney website. For now, all is well. I have an earlier post explaining what I did in more detail after I was having problems for the second time.

So... good and hopeful news. Be careful and let us know how it works. I have never had a Timney trigger issue. With the Timney trigger, one must adjust the pull weight and sear engagement simultaneously, checking for proper function when the desired pull weight is obtained. After ensuring it functions properly/safely, adjust the backlash. I've found the Timney instructions to be sufficient for any adjustments. Once I adjust a trigger, I usually shoot a box of shells... just to check. If you don't malfunction in 20 rounds, and have locked the screws into place sufficiently, you are generally good to go. I don't adjust triggers very often, but check the assembly for debris regularly.

I switched out the Rem J Lock on my Rem 700 with a Callahan Speed Lock. It REALLY made the bolt run smoother and the trigger pull more consistent.
Think I'll try it on my .223 and see what develops. I had forgotten all about that until now.

You are saying I have to adjust the pull weight an the sear engagement at the same time correct? As in turn both of those allen keys at the same time? I want to make sure I am understanding you correctly as I did not adjust them that way.

Sorry, no, not at exactly the same time... adjust the pull weight first, then the sear. By 'simultaneously", I meant they should not be done separately... they are a "group". Anytime you adjust the sear, you should adjust the pull weight first... anytime you adjust pull weight, you should adjust the sear. Make sure those are "good", THEN adjust backlash. It is possible the process will have to be repeated several times to get everything right if you are adjusting to a very light pull weight.
Apologies for any misunderstanding.

No problem and thank you for clearing that up. Is some backlash good? I did not use that adjustment as the trigger shoe doesn't move back very much upon firing, so I think its ok.

I've tried to answer this twice and got a "you must be a member to post" error, third time pays for all...
Overtravel is not desireable to most shooters... some people don't mind some... some people don't want ANY. Personal choice. If you don't feel the need to adjust it, DON'T. To adjust (this procedure assumes you have already guaranteed safe functioning after adjusting the pull), cycle the bolt... screw the backlash screw IN all the way... squeeze the trigger (it won't function)... delicately/slowly adjust the screw OUT until the trigger functions (activates the firing pin). Put some sort of sealer on the three screws so they don't loosen with use... don't use superglue (joke).

Thanks for all the help Kickboxer. Ya know, this is a really good thread for anyone looking to adjust/troubleshoot their Timney 510; I hope others who are having similar problems find this and learn as much as I did. That's why I love the OT!

I have a Timney on my Rem700. I adjusted it as per instructions some years ago. It is set at a very light pull and allmost no backlash.
I set the trigger (ie locked the bolt) with NO round in the chamber and then banged the butt on the ground a few times to check for safe sear engagement. If the banging did not slip the sear, then it was safe for me.
I have adjusted the trigger some years ago and have fired at least 6000 rounds. The trigger is still as crisp as the day I installed it.
