The brass was unfired norman brass. The brass came in a bag not a box so i was worried about the brass being deformed because of shipping and handling so I used my full length die on them before i loaded. I check the length and it was ok so I didn't trim the case. I did not chamfer the brass. The bullet was a boattail AB 180...
If it is right that my die it set down to far then wouldn't all of them be crushed not 2 out of 5? How would i have sized the neck down two much dose my fullength die not expand the neck on the down stroke as it exit's the brass. If so I would assume it would not be possible to size the neck to far? Thanks for the help and interest... learning lots....

What brand seating die you using? Almost seems like an alignment issue but from what I can see in your pic the case mouth looks fine. Was it really hard to extract the expander out of any of the casings when you were resizing? Like the guys said you should lube the inside of the neck and the expander. I like a dry lube so I use powdered graphite (mica works also and is available at auto parts stores). Just dip the case into it upside down covering just the neck. Tap the case to get the excess,if any,out of the neck. Doing it this way I've found no need to lube the expander. In fact I don't have to dip each case. When I feel the expander starting to tighten up I'll dip the next casing.
Just got to wondering if it could be a neck thickness inconsistancy in the casings. Edited by 300S&W - July/18/2013 at 11:39 |

I'm using Hornady die's for the 300 win yes the expander seamed harder then my 30-06 when being extracted on the down stroke... I have the hornady arousal lube which I've read dose not hurt if its sprayed lightly in the case before sizing. Do you think that the reason I had an head space increase after running through my full length die? Maybe not because i had it set up wrong?
Do you think i would be able to notice inconsistency in the neck thickness with my vernier callipers? Would I be able to make an accurate measurement?

I to use the Hornady seater because of that alignment/neck support sleeve.
The withdraw of the expander should be very very easy. If you can notice it's harder than your .30-06 it's probably too much. Whether hard expander extraction can stretch a case enough to change headspace position is a controversial issue among handloaders. But I believe that under the right conditions with VERY HARD expander withdrawl and soft brass it's possible.
Won't need your calipers to check neck thickness. If that's what's causing your problem I believe you'd be able to see it by comparing casings visually. A magnifing glass can help. Another way would be to insert by hand the same bullet point first into the necks, maybe before and after resizing,to see if there is a marked difference in how far it enters.
Just thought of something else. Although I've never had it happen with either of my Hornady seaters or heard of anyone else mentioning it with theirs nowadays anything is possible. Check out your seater to see if somehow the sleeve make be intermittently sticking in the fully or partially down position. Edited by 300S&W - July/18/2013 at 13:09 |
