Hi guys i had a quick question on how much a used reloading set up would cost. I have a customer of mine that used to reload and doesnt shoot anymore and has a complete RCBS reloading set up(press, dies, powder measurer, case cleaner etc). He told me to make him an offer on it but i dont have a clue to what it would be worth. Its an older set up not sure how old but i see at bass pro they have a reloading kit from rcbs for about $360. In your opinions what would be a reasonable offer? Sorry i cant be more specific on what it includes. Thanks for any help

Oh heck yes it would be worth buying... I have a Rockchucker from about '78- 79. I've always kept it lubed as necessary and the ONLY thing I've done to it was paint the handle some years ago, as the bar was not painted from the factory and had started to rust. Mine looks really beat, but functions flawlessly. RCBS has any part you'd ever need. I own three presses, but if I want to do precision loading, I use the RC press... the others are for volume loading for my pistols, etc.

Price? Check out one of the auction sites and put together an average sale price for what sells- that'll give you a good idea.

Quick check on Ebay found a new RCBS kit with Rock Chucker press for $342 shipped from a "Top Rated" seller.  Kits with the Partner press seem to range from around $270 to just over $300.  If it's in nice condition with scale and otherwise complete I'd personally limit my max offer to 50% of best new price and try for less.  Depends on condition, content and what might come with it.  If there are clean dies in calibers you can use that are included, used gun show prices for RCBS and Redding dies range from $15 to $30 depending on caliber and whether or not they are carbide if pistol calibers, Lee and Lyman brand used dies are usually a little less.  (Pacific Northwest area.)

Be aware that dies are usual a separate cost so allow some extra if you'll be gretting sevzaerl die sets...

Buying used stuff always comes in at half or less depending on condition ofcourse. You need to push him a little for his price. Especially if you concerned not to offend him. If he refuses and just wants to get rid of it then you have to start low. Especially if your buying sight unseen and with no detail list of what your getting. Anything RCBS in working order has value and around here loading stuff is still hard to get so try to get it if you can.

For press, powder measure, and case cleaner, I'd offer him somewhere in the neighborhood of $150. Tack on another $15-$20 or so for each set of dies, as long as they're in a chambering you plan to reload and as long as they aren't rusted all to hell. As for the "etc" part, it all depends on what else he has for sale. Tack on another $5 - $10 for a manual powder scale, $40 - $150 for an electronic scale (go to the high end if it includes auto powder dispensor/trickler). If he has calipers & misc measuring tools, tack on maybe another $20 - $50, depending on what he's got. If there's shellholders, hand priming tools, case trimmer, deburring tools, etc., tack on another $20 - $50 or so, depending on volume of stuff and condition.

It's really hard to give you an exact number without knowing brand, condition, and a complete inventory of what he's got. In general, if everything's in good condition, offer him half of MSRP or so.

OR... just offer him $100 sight unseen and see what he says. If he bites, then even if it's crap gear, you likely still made a decent deal. More than that, and you need to see the whole extent of the goods.

sorry for not responding recently, didnt realize i had so many more responses. I will be seeing him in a couple weeks so i will ask for what all he has and if i can take a look at it. I was figuring on offering $150 he has dies for 7mm .243 and one other size, i own a 300wm a 270 a 243 and a 223 plus a few pistols. my dad owns a 7mm so i dont think the die will go to waste but i would have to purchase one for my 300wm. ive seen them at the store, they arent too much. i will let you all know how it goes or atleast get a list of what he has.
