3 of the 4 hunters managed to get bucks down, two very different 180 class bucks, and a real bomber bumping the 200" mark. I'm the lone dissenter, not being able to get a shot off quick enough at a really, really big typical that I never saw again. Oh well, it was a heckuva rewarding and tough week.
First up was Jimmy from PA, a really great guy. We were able to find several good bucks in the 180 class, and one really large framed buck very late in the evening but were unable to determine exactly what it was, so he wisely passed. On the morning of day 4 we were atop a tall sandhill (a whole 25 feet of elevation)glassing for deer. We were able to find a heavy beamed buck under a lone mesquite. Since it was his last day, and the very nice buck was approachable, we went for it. I can't believe we made it to about 100 yards from the buck and he hadn't moved an inch. Jimmy killed him in his bed with one good shot from his 300 Win Mag and 180 nosler partitions. These are huge bodied muleys. This 180 class buck had an incredible near 50" of mass and was probably 8.5 yrs old. That evening we were watching a brushline where the sandy country gives way to the hard country. Luckily we glassed up a really nice buck from about a mile. We took Big Al's son, got the wind right, and made a stalk. Unfortunately when we got over there we had the wrong clump of bushes marked and the buck saw us, from a slightly different location, before we saw him. He rose from his bed and proceeded to get the heck outa there. The boy missed two running shots at a touch over 100 yards but connected on the 3rd, slowing the buck down. A fourth shot from 200 yards put him down for good. He was shooting a Tikka T3 7-08 wearing a VXIII, shooting 140 corelokts. One heckuva beautiful 180 class, 5.5 yr old first mule deer buck for the boy. It was a great display of shooting given the situation. The next morning we decided to go hunt and area that burned about 3 years ago. Over 10,000 acres burned on this ranch alone, and almost 100,000 burned in total. Anyway, there were areas that looked like the surface of the moon, and some areas where the grass had made a slight comeback. We had been working our way through the brush for over 3 hours, but the it wasn't real bad since it was relatively flat and not real sandy. I looked to my right just in time to see a huge buck rise from his bed, stare at us for 2-3 seconds, and turn to leave. I could obviously tell this was a shooter immediately, and when Jack got on him I told him to shoot. The buck was running about 130 yards out and Jack's first shot offhand broke his left leg, slowing him down enough for him to put a killer shot #2 into him. The closer we got, the bigger he got.....a good quandry to be in. He was shooting a Tikka 695 7 Mag, 160 nosler partion bullets, Leupy GR HD 8x42 binos. Once again, a huge bodied deer,6.5 yrs old, lots of mass (almost 40"). A grande' buck bumping the 200" mark. |

Cool pics and a good story too. Been having a bad itch to get an Auadad the last couple of years. May head your direction in the spring.

I would rather not say exactly where it is, but it's safe to say it lies very near the TX/NM line in Texas, no further N than Lubbock. Sorry to be so vague, but as you know big mule deer are in very high demand. It appears as though these same two hunters have spoken for the tags for the next 5 years so we need to make sure we hold onto our property.
