Picking up a Savage 11 in 223 Remington that currently has what appears to be Weaver top mount bases on it.

Debating on replacing the Weaver top mounts and am bouncing between Talley's lightweight scopemount or Talley picatinny rail with either Aadland or Seekins 30mm medium rings.  Scope will be a Weaver Tactical 3-15x50.

I've used each of these Company's products in the past and been very pleased, so really no downside in any of the choices, but really wondering if I need the mounting flexibility that the picatinny rail provides or the strength that the Aadland dual lug or Seekins rings provide for a .223 Rem bolt gun.

Advantage of the Talley's is the price.  They are a little over $40, where the picatinny rail/scope ring option bounces between a $174 to $185.

Rifle will be primarily a range/varmint hunting rifle out to 300 yards.  The scope will live on this rifle and no concerns about swapping scopes.

Talley's seem like a reasonable option, but am I missing anything?  I have great confidence in both Aadland and Seekins, but they both seem to bring more to the table than necessary.

What are you running as bases? Or are they the scopemounts?

Sweet setup.

Thanks.

I was in the same situation as you and have also long been a fan of picatinny rail systems. For this particular setup I wanted a simple and light weight rifle. My thought, like yours is that the scope would stay with the rifle forever and this would be a range/truck type weapon.
I had some feeding issues with the stock magazine, so I switched to a detachable, 10 round AI magazine. Feeding problem solved, but it added some weight, so I scrapped the rail idea and went with the Talleys and couldn't be happier.
For a non-detachable magazine rifle, I think the fact that the Talley's leave the ejection port more accessible is a plus.

Nice rifles gents.  Okay, I'm sold.  Order in on the Talley's.

What stock's are you all running on your rifles?  That is another mod to the rifle that is necessary.  Like the way Savages shoot, but not their stocks.

SVT:  Your's appears to be a Boyd or Stocky thumbhole?

CT:  Manner's T1 or T3?  Stock pack hides the contour of the cheekpiece

That is a factory savage stock, 12 BTCSS.  It was a 1st anniversary gift from my wife.  She bought me its little brother for my 3rd anniversary, 22mag.  She said I'll get "good" gifts on odd years lol.

The green stock in first is a HS Precision, no palm swell.
The black stock in second pic is a Bell and Carlson M40 style.

The action on both is the same, but liked the HS better and went with that. Stock pack is an Eagle.

Thank you for the kind words. Good shooting.

Nice Savage, Graham. How's she shoot?

I know I'm derailing my own thread, but how does the thumbhole stock perform in a hunting scenario?

Given the calibers, expect most of your shots allow for a more deliberate setup on the target, but curious how it would do in a snap shooting/hunting scenario?

Building a 260 Rem that will serve as both a range/target and hunting rifle.  Would like to do something different and considering a thumbhole stock.

Wondering how well a thumbhole stock carries in the field at the ready position and how quickly it mounts for a fast shot.

Thumbhole or pistol grip stocks block your thumb from bolt or tang mounted safety.  So it would not be as quick as a traditional stock.
Lifetime warranty and excellent customer service don't mean a thing when your gun fails during a zombie attack.

Thanks.  It is tang mounted.  I'll stick with what I know works instead of learning an expensive lesson later.

I've never had an issue working the safety on either with the thumbhole stock. I'll try to take time this weekend and get a picture while gripping it to explain.

Thanks.  That will help.

I'm trying to visualize carrying a thumbhole stock in the field.  Natural position would be the pistol grip area.  Here is the one I'm considering:

And what I have typically used:
