I have a rifle that has been given to me which i appreciate very much but the outside of the barrel has been polished. I was wondering if there is a method to make the barrel a little more dull as i can see my face in this one. I don't want to paint anything like that I would just like it to look like a factory dull sst.

Thanks,

It is best to send it to a gunsmith who will have it bead blasted. They know how and it will look great. They can do action and all metal, and it will look professionally done (because it will be).

Yes, bead blast it. You don't even have to take it to a gunsmith if you don't have one nearby. Most machine shops have a blast cabinet, and it's easy to do, and nearly impossible to mess up. You just need to plug the bore before blasting.

better check the rifle out first, maybe its a collectible that would be seriously devalued, especially if it had one of those beautiful blue jobs from the 70-80's.

Rifledude is correct, the bead blasting is easy. If only blasting the barrel, tape off the entire action with 3M painters tape, I then used an ear plug to plug the muzzle followed by a price of electrical tape cut to fit the muzzle crown. Blast the action end first and work your way toward the muzzle, when you get to the muzzle hold a finger over the tape to make sure it doesn't come off. Take it slow and be patient, I put some wax over mine after I blasted and cleaned it and it gave me a deep gray mate finish.

Good point. if it is an older rifle, might be worth doing.

Another method that was a brief fad in the 90s with some street rodders to dull stainless trim such as bumpers, grills, etc. was to rub with fine steel wool saturated in WD 40.  It dulls stainless without changing the surface texture and requires no special equipment.
