This is a follow up to a previous thread.  Looking for a scope for a short action Browning BLR, (7mm-08, 308 or 358) and would like a lightweight option that has a very flexible eye box for quick target acquisition.  Scope will be used for deer hunting with most shots in the 50-100 yard range with occasional shots out to 300 yards.

I think I've rounded it down to these two Leupolds but I'm open to other suggestions.

Is there a big real world difference between these two?  On paper, the VX2 is lighter, better FOV, more consistent eye relief between 2 and 7x and is $100 cheaper.

The $100 isn't a major concern but I'm wondering if the VX3 is justified in this case.  My biggest priority is that the scope is flexible to head position and it provides for a quick and clean view.  Second priority would be that the scope is sufficiently bright for deer hunting 30 minutes before sunrise and 30 minutes after sunset.

Again, these are just two options so if you can think of other options in the $500 or less range, I'm open.

Thank you in advance,
Mike

Those are good choices. You may also wish to check out the Leupy VX-R in 2-7 X 33. The Firedot 4 reticle looks grand.

You'd be hard-pressed to do better than this for the money:

Another fine option would be something like this:

DCAMM,

The Leupold you reference might be an option but the Vortex is way too heavy and the reticle is not what I'm looking for.  Again, most shot will be in that 50-125 yard range with the occasional 300 yard shot.  At those ranges, with a 7mm-08 or 308, I don't a busy reticle like that.

Anyone have any opinion on whether the VX2 will have a more sensitive eye box than the VX3?

I think either one will serve you fine.  My personal BLR (.358 Win.) is topped with a 2-7x32 Monarch UCC.  The VX-3 will be brighter and have more magnification but the VX-2 will have a wider FOV at low power.  The constant ER of the VX-2 would probably get my vote.

For those ranges you cannot beat an FX3 6x42.  One of the brightest and toughest scopes made.  I'd also have to look at Meopta's meostar 6x42.  6x is more than adequate out to, and past 300.

Leupold VX-2 2-7x33 is actually a 2.4x to 6.7x scope.
VX-R 2-7x33 is 2.5x to 6.6x
and VX-3 2.5-8x36 is 2.6x to 7.8x

The VX-2 and VX-R have a bit more field of view at the low end.
All three are of similar size.
VX-3 is a touch better in low light, but VX-R's reticle illumination is, in my opinion, worth it if you expect to come up with some quick shots.
Also, I much prefer the reticles available in the VX-R, so if it were me picking between these three, I would go with the VX-R.

I'm really liking the 3-9x VX-R. I can't wait to try out the 2-7x with the #4 Fire Dot. I think this would be an ideal big game scope for me in my AO. (Area of Operations.)
If at first you don't secede...try..try again.

Thank you for all of the suggestions.

Does  anyone know if I order a few of them from SWFA if I can compare at home and return the ones I do not want?

Koshkin,

Which reticle do you suggest?  I have a circle x reticle in another scope and like it a lot as it tends to center my eye to the center.  Do you like the circle reticle in the vxr?

I recently purchased the VX-R 4-12 and I am very pleased with it as well.  I also have two 2-7x33 VX-2 scopes that work well also but the VX-R is the ticket and a VX-R 2-7 is next on the purchase list.

Is Leupold doing away with the VX-3s?  They are disappearing on the SWFA catalog!

Yes they changed to the VX3I line. Dropped some models and added a new coating but I forgot what it's called.

The 2.5-8x 36 vx3 is very very easy to get behind and can be found for 299.99 currently. Allowing swfa to match is even better! I am debating another...3.5 to 10 for another 40 bucks or so.
That thing on the left....my old ride, some days I miss her.
