I'm planning on getting a .22 revolver for plinking and target shooting. I have a choice between 6.5" and 4" barrels. If I were going to use iron sights, I'd deffinitely go with the longer sight radius, but I'm planning on mounting dot sights because of vision problems. Think the longer barrel is still worth it, or will it make no difference? Thoughts?

22LR are still accelerating at up to about 16-17" of barrel so yes you are giving up a bit of velocity, I'm not sure how much though.

You really need to think about how you intent to use the 22 pistol. I find it rather hard to find holsters for many 22 pistols so if this is a pistol you will be walking around your place with you may want to take that into consideration and my not want to use an optic unless you can custom make a holster because holsters for pistols with optics usually must be custom made. As far as barrel length I would prefer a 4 in barrel to the 6 in barrel and I've had them as short as 2 in and as long as 11 in on a 22 and for what one uses them for mostly snakes varmits plinking targets I dont think the difference between 4in and 6in will be noticable. I do think the added weight if we are talking S&W double actions with the weighted barrel like L frame may be noticable and you may have a preference due to the feel of the pistol. If we are talking Ruger single action then I would pick the longer barrel I just like the way that one feels better.
Honestly by the time you add a scope to a pistol you have a really clunky set up typically where a pistol is really ment to be something carried for convenience where one would usually select a rifle if they knew that they were going to be pursueing some type of critter. It makes a lot more sense to me to mount a crimson trace laser on a pistol than to mount a scope, but there are exceptions and I do have an Aimpoint mounted on a single shot Encore Pistol in 44mag and a 1x Burris mounted to a single shot Encore Pistol in 45-70. If you must use a red dot stay with Aimpoint, EOTech or Trijicon preferably the Aimpoint.

The only real difference between a 4" or 6.5" barrel would apply to iron sights for the sight radius. Unless your shooting rimfire handgun silhouette matches the extra 2.5 inches wont make that much difference in velocity.

I believe RR said he was planning to mount a "dot sight" rather than scope, so depending on what kind of dot sight we're talking about, it doesn't have to make the pistol "clunky' or unwieldy at all. For a pistol, I would use a mini reflex sight such as the Trijicon RMR, Leupold DeltaPoint, Burris Fastfire, Docter, etc. These little mini red dots are very small and only weigh a couple ounces, so they don't burden down the pistol.
I have a Trijicon RMR on my Ruger MKIII "Frankenstein" clone .22 (Tactical Solutions "Pac-Lite" 6" bbl upper, 22/45 grip frame, VQ trigger parts, VZ grip panels), and it is very light, very handy, and very accurate all at the same time. I freakin' LOVE that little pistol! A couple of the SWFA guys have seen it and can attest to the fact the little RMR sight adds very negligible bulk. For a holster, I just bought a cheap Uncle Mike's "Sidekick" nylon holster designed for a 1911, and cut out a notch in the top to make room for the RMR, then melted the edge of the cut to keep it from fraying. Though it ain't pretty, it's functional, and works like a charm. I'm not carrying this pistol for self-defense anyway, and most of the time, I just carry it around in a soft pistol case, because I'm usually just plinking with it. I probably burn more ammo through this pistol than any other pistol I own; it's so much fun to shoot! The RMR dot sight makes it even more fun to shoot and the 3.25 MOA dot on the RMR aims much more precisely than the original coarse irons. |

I have a Ruger Single Nine .22 Mag revolver as well, and I prefer the longer bbl. I just think it balances in my hands better.

Haven't seen that model. At the time I got mine, the dual illuminated model was only available with a large amber dot, and the dot was too large for my taste, so I selected the battery powered 3.25 MOA version. |
