I just finished my first AR build and I'm looking to slap a scope or red dot on it.  This will mainly be used for coyote hunting and shooting with the guys.

Price range $150 - $500

Ideally I would like a red dot with a fixed magnification of about 3x.  I like the red dots, but my eyes do way better with a little zoom.

I want to keep it light and simple.  I don't want a red dot w/ magnifier.

I really like the Burris AR-332 3x but I hate the reticle.  The circle is too thick and the BDC is too small to even be useable.  Seems to be on the heavy side too.

I haven't been able to see any aimpoints in person, but I did get a chance to mount a Vortex Strikefire to my gun and I liked it, if it only had magnification.  I see they are coming out with 3x Spitfire, but again it's got a different reticle.  This one looks better, but I'd still rather stick with a single dot.

Any other recommendations out there or am I just being too picky?

A Trijicon ACOG would work well but they bust your budget by a bunch. You may consider this, a red dot magnifying scope.

I would check this one out. They have a famtastic illumination system, which is just a dot and day time visible.
It is a variable, but would do exactly what your wanting and do it well

Often one can find a used but in very good condition Trijicon ACOG or Compact ACOG on the Samplelist.com website where SWFA has used items for sale.  I bought a fixed 3x compact ACOG with a red crosshair that was a model made a few years ago and I really like it they still make one in 2x that has more eye relief.
These are absolutely my favorite scope for an AR when combined with a LaRue  RCO mount.

Your best bet is Leupold VX-R 1.25-4x20.

There are a couple of options with that scope that have a simple reticle and well-illuminated dot.

The Leupold looks nice (and I might sound ridiculous saying this) but there are 2 things I don't like about it for this gun.  1. not tactical looking 2. variable magnification

I'm looking at the Vortex 3x spitfire again.  Does anyone have experience with it?  Is it even out yet?
I see it's for sale on swfa but that doesn't mean it's available right?

Last time I bought something they didn't tell me it was on back order until after filling out all credit card and shipping info.  I don't really want to go through all that again.

thanks for all the help guys.  I ended up getting the Vortex strikefire for now.  That will hold me off until I find exactly what I'm looking for.

I'm gonna keep checking the samplelist but I might end up scratching the tactical idea and going with the leupold or burris deal for $599

If you could go another $100 you could get the tactical Leupold  VX-R.
