Isn't that just temporary? |

It has been just temporary for over a year! I am in the process of changing that rifle to 6.5 creed. It will primarily be used for matches. But I won't hesitate to use it for medium game either.

Not to jack your thread, but along the same line; my wife wants a hunting rifle; light, handy, etc. for mule deer, antelope, and possibly an elk. I have a Win 70 Long Action I could get re-barreled. Accurate to 1000 yds. (coyotes), not too much recoil, factory cartridge (good availability). I can reload, but she wants factory. I have a few in mind, but don't have a lot of experience with hunting calibers.

6, I would go with the tried a true 30-06. Flat everybody makes ammo for it, you can fine tune it easily on the reloading bench, and it has probobaly stopped more beating hearts than all the other cartridges put together!

BB2; Great common sense suggestion. I appreciate it. But S seems to think that's too much recoil.

I would go with 1-9" as well unless planning on running 180s all the time.

No, don't need it for anything too heavy, got other guns that are availible for things if I need more horsepower. |

1-9" is what I have on both my 7mm-08's and works well with 120 gr all the way to 162 gr (all I have tried).

i have a friend who always tells me the same thing when we discuss barrel twist, ( im not going to say he is right, cause ive never tested the theory) he always tells me you can overspin a bullet, now at normal hunting distances i could easily agree with that. At extreme distances im not sure?? Maybe extra spin past 500 is a good thing?? the two 7-08's i bought for my boys have 1:9.25 twist, im planning on starting them with 120gr bullets and will step them up to a 140gr for deer and a 150-160gr for anything like elk. I wish i never would have traded off my m77mkII 7-08 years back, it was a compact rifle and i have terrible remorse for letting it go! Edited by pyro6999 - April/10/2014 at 13:44 |

More or less ment I didn't need to worry with the heavy 7mm bullets, ie anything over about 160, as if it needs a heavier bullet then I'll use a 30cal bullet in a 30 cal gun (300WSM). I am a fan of the slower twist as they seem to work fine with lighter bullets than fast twist with heavy bullets. I just want a happy medium with this one. plan on bullet weights from 120-140 mainly.
This will be a dedicated hunting gun.

If The bullet dose not spin apart it wont matter. Most of the ones "I" over spin explode at about 15 yard mark, but you have to have a "strong"load and a light bullet. from my testing the lead heats up to boiling and cause an off balance and rips the jacket when it wobbles and yawls then poof buck shot. it happens fast too and it takes a lot for it to happen. a 1-9 in a 7mm-08 is just about the best for all worlds. I was doing a 1-7 in a 22-250 and some faster test barrel in bigger cals. You know just for fun.. |

The 7mm will have about half the wind hold of the 300. This is comparing a 162amax at 2750, to a 178amax at 3050.
