I got a new 10X mil-quad package deal last December that wouldn't read magazine print at 50 yards compared to a 5 year old SS 10x and Leupold 3.5-10X Vari-XIII. This is the first chance I've had to use it, as I was gone all winter.  I sent the scope back which cost me $16. The replacement is blurry from about 6-9 mils out from center and all the way around the outside of the scope except at the top which isn't bad but not sharp. So when trying to use holdover, the aiming point is really  blurry. The old SS 10X does the same thing. The Leupold is clear all the way out.  My cousin bought one so I will take a look through his and compare it.

I talked with two techs, and one said it shouldn't be that way, yet this is the third scope with that problem. Not sure how many send backs this will take.

This time they gave me a return authorization. I don't understand why they didn't issue one the first time but Wendy is checking into that.

Is this a common problem with this scope?

How did you set the ocular adjustment to get the reticle in focus?

That's what I'm thinking too.

To focus the reticle I point the scope at the sky a long ways off. The Diopter is all the way in. I look at the sky, and briefly look at the reticle and keep doing that until it is sharp and leave it there.

It worked with the Leupold.

The image has to be refocused when putting the image at the bottom of the scope.

I forgot to mention that once I used the focus ring, using  the above technique, I then moved the diopter both directions and it didn't make any difference.

I've seen several SS 10X and 10X HDs, and I've not seen the problem you describe. I certainly don't intend to imply there's nothing wrong with your scopes, as there very well may be; just that this isn't typical.

Do you have astigmatism in your eyes?

Also, when adjusting the reticle, did you set parallax to inifnity?

I had my eyes tested 2-3 years ago and nothing was said about astigmatism.

My cousin bought a 12x through my recommendation and we thought it was much better than the replacement. He concurred that the bottom was very blurry and cross hairs wouldn't quite focus. I sent it back. Kind of a bummer since the closest UPS is 20 miles away.

We also compared it with two other scopes and the replacement didn't cut it.

Just wondering if you did this. Not saying you don't have a bad scope, but just wondering.
