None of the above.
Interesting guesses. One of you was pretty close. Despite its rather futuristic look at night, it actually has a pretty somber, yet respectful purpose. |

Oh, sorry guys; I totally forgot about this thread.
It's the Bonfire Memorial at Texas A&M. When I was a student there, Bonfire was a yearly event, and volunteer students participated in its construction, an activity that lasted a couple months (it was always 50-60 ft tall, built out of about 5000 logs in a "wedding cake" design). It was a tradition that lasted for 90 years, always lit right before the annual rivalry football game vs. the University of Texas. Bonfire and all the activities surrounding it was a great source of fun and solidarity among the student body. Unfortunately, that tradition ended in tragedy in 1999 when the stack collapsed during construction, killing 12 students. The Bonfire Memorial was constructed at the spot where Bonfire took place, the ring of the Memorial outlining the perimeter of the wood stack. At the center of the circle, there is a marker which denotes the location of the center pole. The rectangular "portals" you see in the photo along the perimeter of the concrete ring contain bronze monoliths with the likeness of each student's face, along with biographical information about each student, and comments from friends and family cast into another bronze monolith on the opposite side of the portals as a way of memorializing them. When facing outward from the center, each of the portals face the direction of the student's home town from that spot, which is why they are unevenly spaced. You walk down a long, lighted path to get to that spot. It's a very solemn place. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aggie_Bonfire |
