This is Joel, one of two male African Greys we have. He's always watching me.....So much so, I call him "African Gay".

He's got that look on his face as if he doesn't trust you too much, Mark.

Mark calls him gay, I don't think the bird has much love for him for that reason. I wouldn't sleep with him uncaged. he might get's pecking on ya!!

They sleep inside cages in their own room. Each bird has 2 LARGE cages and several manzanita, or ribbon wood, tree stands they hang out on through the day. They "ring" the telephone and then answer it. They have an amazing assortment of sounds and voices they do.

My oldest daughter once told me that if reincarnation is real she wants to come back as one of HER pets...

I worked at the fishing pier throughout highschool I had an elderly gentleman that had a nice african grey.  He loved that bird and it was really his only family.   Every day he was there when I pulled up to open around 5-530.  I always hauled his gear to the end for him and carried him out on the golf cart.  Checked on him several times through the day and just looked after him, afterall he was an elderly fella but had the best stories.

He passed when I was in college and I got a call from his attorney that he had left me the bird and several other assets.  I had no clue and was kinda thrown off.  Apparently he really didn't have any family and left all his stuff to people that had taken care of him and shown him kindness through his life.  I was not able to take care of the bird in college and the attorney found him a nice bird sanctuary that took him in.  I kinda wish now I would have kept him now.  Those birds are unique creatures and very cool.

Neat story, Graham.

My advice after owning 3 Grey's, a yellow headed Amazon and a psychotic umbrella cockatoo, is that birds really don't make good pets. They belong in the wild, as the Good Lord intended.
They outlive, as in your case, the life of the owner and are a pain to facilitate properly. I've tried to convince people NOT to get a parrot as a pet. The Amazon, a rescue, we had only for a short while and we found a home for her.
These two Grey's we have now are rescues, of sorts. They out lived their owners too and probably will outlive me as well.
