This is the bass that was in the pic. In pretty good health considering she had a torn gill plate. It was healed up that way and she put up a pretty good fight. I'll have to look into getting a slightly better camera for action shots. Than half second delay on the easyshare is a pain to say the least.

Take care of Soldiers, Show em how its done and do it with em, Run to the Fight & and hold your ground! I die my men go home! If you're a NCO and this ain't you. GET OUT! GOD BLESS AMERICA!

It's a redfish (red drum), or as we Texans call it, a "red." One that size is often referred to as a "bull red." They eat purty good! That's the fish you get when you eat the classic Cajun dish "blackened redfish."

Skylar caught one about that size on the same trip as well.

Nice batch of Reds, what kind of sharks are they? Do you eat them. I've had Mako before.
When you are dead, you don't know you are dead.It is difficult only for others.

It is the same when you are stupid.

Originally Skip, I was thinking there would be Lemon's in this area, but the Captain explained that these were Black Tip sharks.

Yes, you can eat them. That is what I had for dinner last night.

I marinated them, then prepared a rub and then grilled them. I also prepared a stuffed crab with some homemade salsa to go with it.  I will post a picture of it tonight.

Ted informed me, once I get home to skin the sharks before storing them, because they excrete their waste throughout the body and it exits through the skin. That was the first thing I did.

The funny thing is, all the reds we caught would have easily won the redfish tournament I go to every year, sponsored by one of my company's distributors. We probably caught in the neighborhood of 15 in that 20 - 30 lb size range, but we could only legally keep 5, or one per person (my nephew didn't have a tag for one).

The kid in the photo is my nephew (my brother's son). I wish I'd had the camera ready when he was battling a big shark that we got to the side of the boat, but I was helping him hold onto the rod so it wouldn't yank it out of his hands! We had to let that shark go because we already had too many in the live box. These sharks are fairly decent table fare, but shark in general isn't among my favorite fish to eat.

If you decide to go to the South pacific, go onto the Paul Gauguine cruise.  It is expensive and worth every penny.  I'll go again one of these days.

Oh, and for the record, Aitutaki (Cook Islands) makes Bora Bora look mundane.

Ilya, those were some very cool photos.

My wife would love to go to Bora Bora. If you don't mind, what puts the Cook islands over Bora Bora?

For every one tourist Cook Islands get, French Polynesia gets about a thousand (and Hawaii get a million).  Aitutaki is kinda like Bora Bora was before tourists arrived en masse.  Also, the locals on Cook Islands all speak good English since they have a New Zealand citizenship.

Many of these pictures were taken with a point and shoot camera, so I apologize for the quality.
