heelo,
I need your help in determining the proper ring height for my new scope setup. I have a browning x-bolt hunter rifle. I currently have a leupold vx-1 3-9x50 scope (1 inch tube) on the rifle. The scope is mounted in low leupold QRW rings. There is only 1 mm space between objective and barrel. I have now ordered a leupold vx-r 3-9x50 scope (30 mm tube) for the rifle, and new new 30 mm QRW rings: I cant seem to calculate if the new scope (with identical external objective diameter) also can be mounted in low rings or if I new medium or high rings.? The wider tube should reduce the the diameter difference between objective and tube, or am I wrong? - Mullez

You are correct, the larger tube diameter will decrease the difference between the bell and the tube. What caliber is you X-Bolt? The eye relief and length are almost identical. The outside objective diameter is identical. The only difference is the mounting surface. VX-1 3-9x50 Front: 46.65mm Rear: 56.08mm VX-R 3-9x50 Front: 40.58mm Rear: 50.74mm Are either of your rings near the end of the mounting surface on your current setup?

My xbolt is a 308 win.
The current scope has at least 10 mm space on both sides of both front and rear ring. Which ring height would ypu recommend? Mullez |

With so many variables to account for during mounting a scope, I can't guarantee 100% that the lows will work but, from the measurements I took in comparison with your current setup, I believe the lows will work.

That makes sense to me. Assuming the low rings are the same height from the top of the receiver, and based on the earlier post that the objective diameter is identical, the tube diameter will be 4.6mm higher, which should move the centerline of the scope up 2.3mm, and consequently the objective bell should be an equal amount higher off the barrel (2.3mm), assuming the scope is mounted in roughly the same position. Obviously, if the 30mm "low" rings are not as tall as the 1" rings, this doesn't work out, but that's my math.
