Well first off the first number is the power and the second is the objective lens size. 12x50 are 12 power by 50mm. They are a great bino. you wouldnt feel bad owning these

First off welcome to OT
Your call. I generally like Leupold stuff. One of my favorite binoculars is the Mojave 8x32. However the 8x32 has the new features the 42 and 50 mm sizes won't get until later this year. I have a friend who has the 12x50 and I do not like it much, but he does. His dad has a place in South Dakota and he likes it to hunt there in the wide open spaces. The ergonomics, image and build quality are fine, BUT, and there is always a but, and this one's a deal killer for me, is that there is an excruciatingly narrow obvious field of view. Lots of tunnel effect and it looks like you are looking through a couple of long paper tubes, kind of like a decent image at the end of the tunnel, not up front where it needs to be. I generally will have nothing to do with recommending anything over 10x, but eyes vary and what you see through a 12x50 Mojave may differ from me. Edited by Klamath - January/22/2015 at 11:03 |

Will you hold the binocular unsupported? If so 12x is difficult to hold steady. Also, generally speaking, the greater the magnification the smaller the exit pupil, consequently, less light conducted thru the barrels to your eyes.
As was mentioned above 10x is about as much magnification as I would want for general use. Clarity is much more important than magnification. Wf |
