My mother-in-law is from Japan, and lives with my wife and me.  I have the NHK Japan TV channel on satellite, so she can watch Japanese television.  She enjoys watching Sumo wrestling and I started watching it with her.  A few years ago, the top Japanese wrestlers put on an exhibition tournament in Los Angeles, so I went to it.  The following are some pics from that tournament.

Sumo comes from the Shinto religion, and was started as some sort of agricultural blessing for good crops.  The wrestlers throw salt into the ring to ward off evil spirits prior their bout.  There ar six tournaments per year in Japan, and a new clay Dohyo is created several days ahead of the tournament to allow it to dry.

Good photos, Dave!

Very unusual subject!
