Hi,
I've been going around and around trying to come up with a scope for my M14 mounted in a Sage EBR Stock! I admit to liking Euro glass the best but the $$$ is just not there at this time. I wanted to go IOR but can't swing it. Saw some good things on the new SIII Tactical scopes and thought I would ask you guys for your opinion? I hear pretty good things about the SS 3x9 MOST of the time but feel from my research that the Sightron will have better glass and although maybe not as toughly built as well as the SS scopes, the SIII will be tough enough for a M14 DMR? |

I don't have the SIII, but I'll swear by the 3-9x42 SWFA. It's a beast! Welcome to the forum. Lots of great info by a lot of folks that know a lot more than me here. Search for posts by Koshkin on the SS and the SIII. His reviews and advice are truly insightful, and they benefit from the education and tools of an optics engineer. Hi,
Thanks! Yes I have done my research (I think!) and the problem is that both of these scopes get good reviews! I was also looking at the Leupold VXR Patrol Tactical line also but wondered if they were "stout" enough for the M14? The Tactical IOR's are beast and the way I would like to go,even the USO ST-10 can be had for near $1200 but that is pretty much double the money!] I'll admit that at the moment I'm leaning to the Sightron, it has good glass, supposedly a tough erector, nice knobs, mil dot, Mil/Mil set up and I have seen a guy using a higher power SIII making head shots on rabbits at 1000 yds! Really wild! |

The m-14 eats scopes, so I would go with the SS. Can't get much more durable for the money.

Hi Billy,
Yes! In the past few days I see myself PUSHED to the SS 3x9 for that very reason! Are you using one on an M14??? |

No. I own just about every other model of SS but the 3-9. Nor do I own a M-14. But the the reputation of both preceded themselves. My only other words of advise would be don't skimp on mounts.

Hi,
Yes, I have the Sage DSCB Mount made for the EBR stock! This is the one the military uses. I also have some quick detach ARMS # 22 Rings so I should be good! Thanks for the info! |

Hi,
Well.. I just talked to a gentleman at Sightron (can't get that scope out of my head) and asked about the possibility of issues from mounting it on a M14 and he said no problem WHAT SO EVER! Sounded good anyway! Said it was a tough scope and was used on harder kicking rifles than an M14? I just might have to try one, can't seem to get it out of my head! |

The SS 3-9x42 has a first focal plane (FFP) reticle. Is the Sightron SIII a FFP reticle?

Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

I have the SS 3-9x and the VX-R 3-9x. I really like the VX-R and I love my SS. The glass on the SS is clearly superior to the VX-R. No question, but I like the Firedot on the VX-R.
Now tell us about your M-14......

Hi,
Weeaaaaa!!!! You guys aren't helping me with this delima I'm in! No I think the Sightron SIII 3.5x10x42 is a SFP, thats no problem to me as I'll sight it in at 200yds and anything beyond that I will be on 10X anyway! I have nothing against SS scopes (both scopes are Japanese anyway) and the SS is actually cheaper, I just thought I would get better glass with the Sightron????????? My M14 was built by Clint McKee at Fulton Armoury in the 90's. It has a Forged Polytech reciever with all USGI Parts with a TRW bolt conversion. It has a USGI CL barrel and I have a SAGE EBR Stock to put it in. For a mount I have the SAGE cantilever mount made for the SAGE EBR,the same one the military uses. For rings I have a set of ARMS#22 detachables ready to go I just need to make up my mind between these two scopes! |

I don't know which would have better glass. The SS or the SIII. Heck, if you want the S3, go for it.

That is a tough call.
S3 3.5-10x44 is a little better optically, largely owing to the sidefocus allowing you to finetune the image, but it has a SFP reticle and the reticle is the standard MilDot or a hash-style MOA reticle. I definitely prefer the SWFA's Mil-Quad to both of those. The turrets are pretty good on both. If I were choosing between these two, the choice would come down to the application. The SWFA SS 3-9x42 is probably a better DMR scope: there is less stuff ot adjust and fewer things to worry about. However, if the applicaiton is all about precision, than the Sightorn S3 is a better option. ILya

Hi,
Thanks Koshkin! I was hoping you would drop by! Yes, I am looking at the scope as a DMR role so guess I will go with the SS 3x9. I also want to build a Tikka T3 300 Win Mag and will probably go with a Sightron for that! That way I can try both scopes just to see for myself! Thanks again! |

Sounds like a good plan.
Let us know what you think once you play with the scopes. ILya
