Good day to all, my question is in regards to ring height vs. eye alignment. I currently have a 1" scope mounted on my Rem 700 in 308 Win using Leupold STD high rings and am planning on going to a 30 mm scope. when I cheek the stock my eye alignment is slightly higher causing me to have to find the reticle by moving my head slightly lower on the stock. when I do get a 30 mm scope I believe it will mount slightly higher with the 30 mm STD high rings, maybe 0.090, if I use the 30mm STD super high rings I believe it will raise the scope another 0.100". so which would be better, direct eye alignment, or having the scope slightly lower? thanks for your time, sig357fan |

IMO, mount it as low as possible without having to contort your head to find your "view". Obviously, everybody is built differently (i.e. long neck, short arms, rounded shoulders, etc). I try to shoulder the rifle with closed eyes to my normal hold position ... then open the eyes up. You should see full view without having to move to locate it. If you don't, keep working on the set-up. BTW, welcome!

When mounting the scope, don't bother with where its at quite just yet. Shoulder the rifle with your eyes closed in the position your going to be SHOOTING MOST OFTEN. get the rifle where you feel your in your most natural shooting position with a solid cheek weld, then open your eyes, where is the reticle? Set up your eye relief and rings to bring the reticle to your eye DO NOT move your head to the scope. Once the eye box is set up/down go and adjust the diopter adjustment ring for clarity of the reticle. Lock it down. Again mount the rifle to your shoulder with your eyes closed in ready to fire position, open your eyes and you should have a perfect sight alignment if you set it up correctly. trial and error now is your friend later! Good Luck!
BTW: Welcome to the OT. |

What he said is good information. You are thinking that the stock is a permanent part of the rifle. Wrong. It is the most important part of a fine rifle. If you want the best platform the stock will need to be changed. Preferably to an adjustable stock that fits your body. Once you find your measurements then you can get a custom stock, tailored to the dementions that fit you. One size doesn't fit all. Finding a stock maker that can fit a stock to fit you is hard. It is nearly a lost art. The American shooter has been dumbed down to accept what is provided rather than what is best. When you get the gun that fits you and the gun become one. It may not have the best barrel but you will hit better than all others that do not fit you.

Egg-xactly why I dislike Tikka. To ME...they shoulder like an AK-47. LOTS of options for left hander's like me, cool caliber selection, buttery smooth action, but they don't fit ME.
What scope and obj size?

At the risk of running afoul of our resident Tikkaites, I agree totally. I like the fact they usually shoot well out of the box and I like the trigger, which is the same as used on Sakos...but I HATE the OEM stock, the scope mounts and method of mounting, the magazine, and the fact they only come in one action length. |

But anyway, back to the topic at hand, I agree with B&B on ring height and the method for determining it, and I agree with Steely on the way to setup your scope for proper eye relief.
In general, with the more straight comb stock styles I prefer, "as low as possible" is usually better when it comes to scope mounts and natural alignment with my eye. |
