I recently bought a ruger 223 to paper punch with out to 300 yards. The furthest I have shot in the past  is 100 yards. So I would appreciate any guidance on a scope. My budget is 500$.I will slowly work up to 300 yards and that will take time. Thanks this board is always very helpful.

Is this rifle used solely for shooting paper?? A fixed power SS comes to mind and it's under your stated budget.
Something like an SS 10x or 12x would be ideal, I would think.
If at first you don't secede...try..try again.

Then I again humbly suggest the legendary SS 10x or 12x, if you like.

I love fixed powers for paper punching. Simple, no fuss, no muss, and the SS has a rear or side focus to dial in.

Definitely this. And use the money you saved on your budget to purchase good rings and ammo. Don't skimp on rings. Talley's would be a good choice.
