Since the topics of RAW vs JPEG file formats and White Balance were brought up in Skylar's 70-200 lens thread yesterday, I thought it would be better to start a new thread rather than try to cover those subjects and his lens choice all in the same thread.
Describing these subjects in an easy to understand manner without typing out a post the length of War and Peace is difficult, at least for me. So, rather than attempting to do so, I thought photographer Nasim Mansurov did a good job of explaining the advantages and disadvantages of RAW vs JPEG formats in this article: https://photographylife.com/raw-vs-jpeg I thought he also did a good job of explaining what white balance is, why setting it correctly is important to your photos, why your camera doesn't always get it right, and why shooting in RAW format is an advantage to getting white balance adjusted correctly in this article: https://photographylife.com/what-is-white-balance |

One thing I didn't know about RAW, was you couldn't view Nikon's RAW images in a Cannon Camera and vice versa. Regardless they load the same in post, but not visible files in each others camera body.
Both are great articles, thanks for posting this Ted.

Or in any other brand body for that matter. All the camera manufacturers use their own proprietary "secret sauce" RAW file formats. |

Right, but I was thinking that perhaps they would still be viewable on another device, but that actually make much more sense.
Because I can view Nikon's Raw files called NEF on my tablet or computer. I can also load Cannon Raw, CR2 files the same way. However Cannon's CR2 file wouldn't be visible in the display on my camera, because of as you stated, both manufactures creative secret sauce is proprietary. I thought that each of which, since a file in general on a SD card would still be visible regardless of what device is used to look at the file for illustrative purposes.

That's because your computer has your post-processing software configured to import RAW files from all the major formats. On the other hand, an SD or CF card used in a specific camera is formatted only for that camera's native format. Once the card is formatted, only that brand camera can then read or write to that card unless re-formatted to a different brand camera.

Also on RAW compatibility, Nikon (all I'm familiar with) RAW files change with camera generations. Lightroom 3 that I have will read the RAW file from my D40 and D3100 but not my D7100.
So now I have to get the new LR so I can shoot RAW on the 7100...ugh |
