Looking to get a new set of binos. Looking at the Vortex viper hd in a 12x50. What other recommendations do you guys have for the price range or is the vipers good.
I did read a post about going up in magnification is bad in under 1000.00 binos, can someone elaborate? |

Shooter I am NO expert. From what I understand the higher in magnification you get the more the lack of quality of glass will be apparent. For example: I can have X bino in a 8x42 and it looks good, but if I get the same glass/bino in 12x50 the image looks terrible.
Are you using these for hunting? |

Tell us a little about what your going to be using these for? Not a lot of guys can freehand 12x comfortably. 8x and 10x are much easier. Some great binos can be had for <$700. Zen ED3, Zen Primes, Vortex Viper, Maven B3 |

I have a pair of leupold mojave in 12x. I really wish I would have gone with the 10x, but I had some 8x Nikons that I wanted a little more power from. Turns out 10x would have been perfect. But then again I do not use them with a tripod.

Not for hunting, outdoor use in general. At the lake looking at wildlife, etc. Can be some long distances, thats why I was considering the 12X. I have some 10X nikon monarchs and they look pretty good to me. Thought the 12X could be a little more useful for detail.

You would be better served by a good small spotting scope on a decent tripod. I don't think that you would see more detail with a 12x than with a 10x. You will see a bigger image, but the handshake will preclude observing more detail. Believe it or not, most people see more detail with lower power than with high power optics.
A very high quality 8x will probably show you more detail than a mediocre 12x binocular. Doesn't make sense, i know. It's just not worth spending money on the 12x to find out. |

I know exactly one person who can effectively use a 12x binocular without support.
If you are looking to set up on a tripod, then get a 15x56 bino and be done with it. If you are looking for handheld use a higher quality 10x is the way to go. Viper HD is a nice bino for the money and most people I know are happy with it. In the $700 and under price range, there are not that many good quality 10x binoculars with objectives of 50mm or more. It probably comes down to Viper HD 10x50 and Kowa BD XD 10x56. If you are willing to consider 10x42 binos your options open up considerably and you should really check out Zen-Ray Prime HD 10x42. Vanguard Endeavor EDII. Fantastic optics, seem to be pretty well made.

Ok, so say the viper HD 10x50 will make my monarch (not 7's 2007 models i think) 10x42 look like tasco's? I thought they did pretty good too....

I would choose the Viper HD 10X42 over the 10X50. The 10x50 is quite narrow in FOV, and the 10X42 is very compact for a full size 10X42.

Yes. The Viper HD 10x42 of today is head and shoulders and belt buckle above the Nikon of 10 years ago. |
